Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Mistake mating!

I left my Lab bitch with my friend as my male Belgian shepherd was going crazy because my lab was in season.
She called me yesterday to say that while on a walk a border collie got to my bitch, by the time my friend ran over, the deed had been done.
Now I know this collie, he is a proved stud dog, with all his breed tests done. My bitch is also hip and eye tested.
Im guessing it wouldnt be awful to let her have the puppies, as both parents are healthy and KC reg'ed???
How long can i leave her preganant before i decide whether to give her an injection?
She mated with this dog 3 days ago!

I would love to let her have puppies, the border collie is lovely and my bitch is too, i would keep one.
If i did let her have them, would they need to be hearing tested?

I appreciate anyones comments.

Hi Becki. If she were mine I'd get her to the vet straight away - there may still be time to have the 'morning-after' injection. It doesn't matter that both parents are KC registered, because they are different breeds! How old is your bitch? Yes, you may well want to keep a puppy, but what about the rest of the litter? You may well have 9 pups still at home at 14 weeks old (it happened to a friend of mine, and these were pedigree dogs) eating you out of house and home. Because crossbreed pups are 10-a-penny, and if you deliberately let her go ahead then you cannot, in honour, dump the surplus ones on a rescue kennel.

Yes get her to the vets straight away:) Why did your friend have her off the lead ? Any bitch in season should never be let of to roam freely. Why add to the many unwanted rescue Labs/Xcross Labs that are currently waiting for new homes as I would imagine some of the pups would end up. Funny that the dog is a 'proved' stud dog. So why would you have your bitch hip and eye tested if you are going to let her have mongrels ?? What was the point ? Why put her through a mistaken pregnancy ? What is the point ?>

Sorry if I am sounding a bit perhaps negative but do you realise the amount of unwanted abandoned dogs in this country ? No I doubt it otherwise you would never have let this situation happen .:(

take her to the vets immediately and i suggest the morning after jab. as others have said, kc registration is irrelevant in the parents of a cross breed litter...as you would not be able to register the cross breed pups. having a bitch in whelp is not that straightforward....there could be complications, the bitch could be unwell, do you want to take the risk of a big vets bill ? If you have a litter of cross breeds you will have trouble finding homes for them for free....you are unlikely to get money for them.
discuss with your vet having your bitch spayed if having a season is a problem for your male dog. In any case I would not leave her with this friend again, as she clearly does not understand about caring for a bitch in season. I dont walk my bitch in public even on a lead whilst in season, as its nigh on impossible to stop a rogue dog. I can,t believe that your in seasonbitch was allowed to roam off lead :(

This has to be a WUM surely. No ones THAT stupid! And she says her friend called her yesterday to say her dog had been mated and then at the end says it happened three days ago?! OK so which is it?!
