Hi, this is my first post on here although I have read on many occassions the forums.

Please can you give a novice some advice

My golden retreiver is as I type in labour, her contractions started at 11.50 this am and the waters broke at 12, my questions is she has had about 7 or 8 contractions maybe more and now has what I guess is the sack (it's a red ish colour) the contrations have now seemed to have stoped.

The book I have said that she should rupture the sac but she seems to just be panting in her bed.

All is very calm and she is not distressed in the slightest.

Can you please tell me if this is normal or should I be doing something to help her.

Thanks in advance

Maria

Thanks for the messages and the PM Inca I may call you later.

Since I put the note on a large amount of green tar like fluid has been released, I did a quick search on google and it said call the vet!!

Just got back he may have to do a c setion at 3pm if nothing happens, there are no puppy's on the way but the green fluid may have been the sack from the first puppy which may be dead!! he is hoping she will start again but I need to call him at 2.45 if not.  £450.00 vet bill on the way!

She in herself is very calm I think it is me that is just in a state of panic still fingers crossed she will have had one in the next 3/4 of an hour.

I hope all is well with her. Did your vet check for fetal heartbeats or do an ultrasound? I don't want to frighten you but sometimes if the first puppy that has made it to the canal is dead, the others get backed up...like a assembly line...their placenta's unhook from the placenta walls and they can't go anywhere because of the dead puppy in the way. They only have a few minutes to be born because of the very small amount of oxygen left in the placenta as they make their way down the birth canal.

However, if she's not laboring it could be that everything has just come to a stop. But I would want the Vet to do an ultrasound and see what's going on in there.

Actually if it were me, and she started labor I would of just opted for him to do the c-section immediately and not risk waiting. Just not worth the stress and worry..or risk to her and the babies.

Hi just read this post, how are things ?

Thanks for all the reply's. We got to the vet's at 3pm and he did a section

Well I am happy to say after waiting in the vets for over two and a half hours he came to the waiting room and called us in, he said 9 puppy's 5 doing ok and 4 fighting for life! mum is fine.

We waited another few minutes before he took us through to see her and the 5 strong ones wow they are so beautiful,  I asked to see the other 4 which were being worked on and ended up helping which made me feel really good as just sitting in the waiting room was driving me crackers.

Anyhow 1 died and three have pulled through, however we still have one that is finding it hard to suck on mum so I don't hold out much hope for that one we are watching over and helping with them I guess it's down to mother nature now, the vet did say that the final three might die so be ready for the shock, well they won't if we have anything to do with it, the good thing is now we don't know which were the other two as they all look the same still that can only be a good thing as we would spot the weaker ones.

We finally got home with mum and baby's at 7.30 so it's been a long day.

Lisa thank you so much, I will catch up with you tomorrow.

I'm so happy for you that all mostly turned out so well. Hopefully the weaker puppies will catch up and do fine as well. Keep us posted and give those babies lots of kisses!

Again thanks for all your reply's.

Unfortunately the weak one died this afternoon, so we are now down to 7 but all seem to be happy feeding and sleeping.
