Hi my pups have now left for their new homes. 

My SWD's are a breed that need to be socialised from an early age so I advised new buyers to make sure that their vet did the 8 and then 10 week vaccines.  Had one person today who went to their vets who do it at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and then the dogs aren't allowed out for another 2 weeks bringing them to 14 weeks.  I feel that this is going to be a total disaster for the pup as he isn't going to be socialised in the way that I wish.  What do others feel?

The vet said that my vet must use a new vacine but I've done it at this age for years !!

My vet also did vaccs. at 8 and then 12 weeks (this was 3 years ago) and i took Banya out "in arms" to places i felt were pretty safe where the dogs were  likely to be vaccinated. I was told that after the first vacc. the pup is pretty well covered anyway, and i feel so many dogs are pts or have problems due to lack of socialisation i weighed up the risks and went for it, no regrets at all. I didn't put her down on areas where other dogs walked etc, but let her meet friend's dog's in the home and then took her out in arms to meet people, so she did still get socialised to both.

Don't think i would have done it if i had lived in an area rife with parvo etc though.

I do agree with Lindsay here, it depends on where you live.
I discussed it with my vet when I had my last pup 4 years ago, he felt that as this is a pretty safe area and the vets here of any outbreaks, taking the pups out after the first vac was pretty much safe, although as with anything there is always a risk.

My vet refuses to use the 8/10 week method, saying none of the parmaceutical companies can show her evidence that it is as effective as the 12 week method.  However, there are often parvo outbreaks in some aea around here.

my vets did vaccs at 8 and 12 weeks, and also offered a 4 week puppy socialisation class for puppies the same age, to fill in that gap before walkies were allowed.

I also took my dobe pup to boot fairs before he was allowed on the ground :)

3 yrs ago my vet adviced 8wk for first puppy vac then second at 12wk in compliance with the guidlines issued by Merial, the manufacturers. 24hrs later one pup is ill, diagnosis took 2wks to come back, a rare disease. The diagnosis came back late on the Tuesday evening, first thing Wednesday morning that vet cancelled his contract with Merial...... 11wks + 3dys later another 1 pup goes down with parvo, during the next 3 dys so do the rest of my litter. Just thought I`d mention that, you need to do some research & then make your own mind up :)

Forgot to say my pups didn`t go out, got a very large area here but they met people & guess what, Merial said parvo could have been brought in by anybody even tho I took EVERY precaution humanely possible..... & Steve Dean, vice president(now president) of sarrs scheme said I probably brought it back myself from when I had to go to vets clinic with Reddy, pup who went sick 24hrs later after first vac............yea right!!!!!! sure I did, of course why didn`t I think of that?????? Stupid me eh??

well blue was done yestreday at 8 weeks then 10 weeks,but the other dog have been out to shows and walks,training,ectand touch wood they not bought any thing back with,
so blue going up the track today out in the big wide world,
you cannot wrap them up in cotton wool all time,hopfully they build up a immunity against diseases,

chase had hiis booster done andd at every 18months apart,
wispa who 7 will not be vacc any more,after 7 i never vacc.

I agree with you that not socialising a pup before 14 weeks is bad news.  Most vets around here will vaccinate at 8 an 10 weeks and will encourage careful socialising after the first vacc.  I have always encouraged people to bring their pups to class from 8 weeks and to attend extra-curriculum socialising sessions.  I see a few 14 week old pups out for the first time that are unable to cope around other dogs. These pups then come here daily and walk with my dogs and although we do make great progress with their doggy social skills they will always be disadvantaged because of the lack of early socialising.

After Fagans first jab at 8 weeks he started puppy socialisation and went out in my arms for a week (because he wouldnt walk on his lead :rolleyes:) by 9 weeks he was walking on his lead and I was taking him everywhere with me, obviously I was careful not to take him to areas usually over populated with dogs, I even took him clay pigeon shooting.  By the time he had his second vaccine at 12 weeks he was totally socialised and very obedient on the lead :)
