Hi. Exactly one week ago i adopted a 4 month old puppy at the dog pound. the first day i took him home, i noticed he had a hacking cough and it was getting worse by the day. i took him to the vet and got him medicine (pills and drops) but now my puppy seems like his cough is breaking up which is good but his cough is now a little more constant than before. what should i do and is this what i should expect in the "healing process" ? thanks....

Kennel cough can take quite a long time to get better, sometimes several weeks.  Keep up with the anti-biotics and keep him warm, with time he should be fine.

If kennel cough is a virus/bacterial infection & I don`t know of any vets that do tests to differentiate or determine the source, then what would antibiotics do, are they a cure for it?? Thought they should only be used if a secondary infection occurs??
The over use of antibiotics is well documented in humans.

keep him well fed, warm and happy and make sure he gets his pills on time as recommended, and be patient - kennel cough in puppies can take quite a while to go, it is always worse than in adults.  and once he's clear, get him vaccinated against it - it's only about £15, and well worth it IMO.  especially if you take him to training classes with other dogs or boarding kennels (I work in one and it is rife at the mo).

Keep him warm and snug and try some kids benolyn or some warm honey and milk to sooth his throat.

he will be fine once he has completed his treatment.
