Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Puppy won't walk

My puppy (who is 20 weeks) will walk for myself and husband, but if my children who are 17 and 14 take him out he will only walk to the bottom of the road, then he sits and refuses to walk for them.  In the end they bring him back.

Yesterday I was at a friends house and she took my puppy for a walk, he was excited going out, but he got around the corner and then sat down and refused to move.

When we first had him we did have a problem with him, a ten minute walk around the block would take about half an hour, but I cannot understand why he will not walk with my boys now.

I used to have a dog who refused to walk with anyone other than my husband or myself. She refused to get out of sight of the house - maybe she didn't feel safe going away with a 'stranger'? Have you tried going with your boys while they hold the lead? How often have your sons taken him out?  If it's only once a week or so it may be he doesn't like the change!

My sons don't take him out that often, you know how it is, "yes mum lets get a puppy we will take him out", my boys were meant to take him out every evening for a walk, (I didn't imagine that this would be true), I do take him out all the time, my husband only comes with me (probably on a Sunday), so actually my dog may not even go with my husband, my husband hasn't taken him out on his own.  When you said about being near the house, that could be right because my puppy only goes to the end of our road and will not go any further.

If my youngest son takes him, I do go with him, then he will walk no problem.

It sounds very familiar! He won't go without mum! It loks like your sons will have to get more into the habit of helping (unless they're happy to be seen as 'not safe' by your pup ;) ) 'Stranger danger' and all that!

my 15mth old cavalier was really hard to get walking she used to just sit outside the house and refuse to go anywhere else , we took her to a quiet park and i think the interesting smells got her moving and now she runs like the wind....
