What is the time that should be left between litters. I've heard that it should be one season between is this right or not long enough.

Although i don't breed, I have heard/read, that it is best to leave at least one season between litters.

One or more, bitches should not normally be bred on consecutive seasons (apart from a very few extenuating reasons such as very infrequent seasons etc)  However, there is certainly no problem  with leaving 2 or 3 seasons between litters.

one season in between litters is advised to let your bitch have a break and get back into peak condition. You can leave it longer as well though. But most breeders will only let the bitches have 3-4 litters at the most in their lifespan as they normally do not let them have a first litter until their 3rd season (and is at least 2 years old) sometimes later if its a slow maturing breed. it is not advisable normally to let a bitch have her first litter after she is 4 years old and her last should be no later than 7 years of age, indeed if a bitch is 8 years old when the puppies are born, then the KC will not register them unless you have asked their permission before mating the bitch.

I leave 2 years between mine but different breeds have different needs.

With small to avergae sized litters I have bred after one seasons break, and then longer again if breeding a thrid time.

Wehn I had a large liter of 9 firsttime the bitch didn't wasn't mated again for over two years, missed and then didn't have her second litter until a year after that.  The second litter was only 4 pups, so she was mated 14 months later, and will now be spayed when her milk dries up.

I have left one season in between my bitches seasons but I am lucky because this means a gap of 15 months before mating again from the birth of the pups but if you have a bitch that has more frequent seasons then I would take that into consideration.  I would certainly never consider breeding with less than a year in between.
