Is there anyway to prevent mastitis? My bitch is due anyday. With her last litter she got mastitis a week after i weaned her from the pups. Ive never had this problem with any of my other bitches but now im worried that she will get it again. Does anyone know of something i can do before hand to prevent it? Thanks for the help..

Allow natural weaning, in other words allow the bitch to feed her pups as long as she wants to.

well i tried that but by the 3rd week i think she had enough of them and if it were up to her she would have just stopped. I had to sit there with her while she fed for the last week so i can wean them. She had 13 pups and even though i was trying to help her by bottle feeding the BIG ones so the little ones can drink from her she just didnt want to do it anymore. Like i said i have 5 bitches that i never had a problem with where they weaned themselfs but this bitch is alot different from the others. She will not leave my side for 1 min of the day. When she has her pups if i am not in the room with her she will not stay with them to much. I would have just retired her after her 1st litter but she throws show champions. Every one of her pups from her last litter are CH. Thanks for the reply

i always put my bitch on anitbotics for 5day before and 14 after birth to stop any infection, like mastitis, fading puppy,e coil, and so on.and i have not had any problem with the tablets with the bitch or puppies
Sorry if this is wrong but my vet told me you shouldnt use antibotics on a bitch due to whelp as it can stop the production of milk. Only going by my vets advice, i am sure i will be corrected if wrong...

both my girls milk flow was very good,
