Hi
My bitch is on day 57 and for the last week will not eat the puppy food (eukanuba) I have been feeding her.She has gone really fussy. She will only eat fish and scrambled eggs. She will eat rice and pasta so I have been mixing fish with this. Will this be ok as I am worried she is not getting the nutrients she needs.
thanks Louise

she is about the give birth and is not sure what she wants ? at this stage i would feed her what ever she wants chicken , fish or any meat don't worry her appitite will return after she whelps then she will eat you out of house and home ...good luck :)
This is normal, she does not have the room. Don't Eukanuba say not to feed pregnant bitches with their puppy variety???

When my girl did this I just feed her what she wanted then gave her Vetzene nor sure if that is the right spelling to ensure she got all the correct vitamins. She has had 3 healthy litters and no problems with milk so am assuming it hasnt done her any damage. As a mum to 3 I well remember the last few weeks of pregnancy eating very little as there was no room. I am assuming dogs are the same.

Today she will not eat nothing.I have tried her with fresh meat usually her favourite and have also offered her fish. She sniffs its and walks away. She is also barking at the slightest noise.Do you think she could be getting ready for whelping.
what is her temperature. That's definitely a sign. but it also could be that she is so packed with puppies that she is too uncomfortable. What day is she on now?
Hi my girl stopped eating from day 56 and i got really worried but my mind was put at ease with the help of everyone on this forum.
She stopped eating properly right up to the day she had the litter then she ate everything in sight.
I though eukanuba only done there foods in dry complete foods i was told by my vet not to feed this while pregnant as it swells in the stomach causing discomfort so i switched her to canned puppy food.
During the time she was off her food she would only eat boiled rice and pasta and would not drink water so i gave her whelpi substitute milk for the last week or so of her pregnancy and did her no harm. She gave birth to a very healthy litter.
Dogs can pick up on when people are worried and anxcious and some dogs will play on this like mine do hehehehehe
Good luck and hope to hear some good news soon.
Admin just to note all puppies have gone thanks.

Hi
she is on day 60 today and although she did eat some fish yesterday she was sick afterwards.I have made her some scrambled eggs today but she won`t entertain it.She is also not drinking an awful lot.She is very restless but no panting or anything.Last time she had her pups on day 60.Just an another quick question is it true what people have been telling me that usually their first litter is the biggest ?
thanks
Louise

The litter size depends entirely on the bitch. How many eggs she releases, how many are ripe for fertilisation when the sperm is available, how many embryos implant, how many are subsequently absorbed ... all these conditions vary at each season. One of my bitches had 4 pups in her first litter and 5 in her second ... ;)

I had heard that at one point too. But I believe it's a myth in most cases. I've heard of one bitch (not mine) that had 4 litters total. Her first was 5 I believe and then she had a couple litters of 2 and 3 puppies but her last litter was 8!!! So I do think it really depends on the number of eggs furtilized, condition of the bitch overall, viable sperm, reabsorbtions, etc.
I will say though that I do believe the older the bitch gets and as her uterus is not as in the finest of shape because of progesterone effects on the lining that the numbers in a litter can go down for that reason. If the uterine lining with each season is hit hard by progesterone then the lining can become more damaged and not every embryo gets implanted. This is why some reproduction specialist Vets recommend doing back to back breedings.
