hi all....at what age is it ok to give a pigs ear to a pup?...i got an 8 week old bullmastiff....many thanks

IMHO never, because they are deep fried and can cause impaction; better a stuffed kong or a nice raw bone.

Fresh pigs ears would be ok when he`s a bit older tho maybe 4/5mths, in fact my older ones have just a few minutes ago finished theirs.

Not an 8 week old pup, a stuffed kong or a large bone with the marrow removed would be a lot better. If you give a bone to a pup it may be best to put it in the fridge between chewing session and discard after a week and replace.

Hi Jackie.

Just wondering why would you remove the marrow from the bone? I didnt know that it could be a problem.

Thanks Debbie

A small amount would not but a young pup would not be able to tolerate a large amount and would get an upset stomach. Well that has been my finding and I remove it and cook in a little water and then let the pup have it a little at a time with it's food, have others found it ok with an 8 week old.

JAckie H is correct; a lot of marrow for any dog can give them the squits :(

Yes I`ve seen dogs/pups with d/rear from too much marrow, adult dogs when not used to it & pups cos it`s just too rich for them so they need to become accustomed to it. Funny enough tho when I make stock with marrow bones & give them the liquid it doesn`t happen then, probably because I skim the fat off & it`s diluted.

Thanks for that, my lab pup was fine with marrow at 8 weeks but she only had one bone a fortnight.
I will remove it from now on for the bullmastiff pup, and build her up more gradual.

Thanks again Debbie
