When in relation to a bitches season is the best time to hip score?Gillian

Hi, if its any help, I had my young bitch hip- scored a few days into her season and the vets weren`t at all concerned. All my bitches and my one dog have been scored, and the vet has never asked when the girls are either due in or when they were last in, so I presume it doesn`t matter to much. Hope that helps. Gail.

In theory it shouldn't matter in the slightest Gillian. The joint is all thats being checked and whatever else happens that is fixed and cannot be altered. In the early days of a puppy's life the pelvis, as you know, is really just cartiledge and not solid but once set could only change with wear or damage. Ive never heard of any talk of variation and would be very interested in anyone who feels there might be some. :)

Regards, John

Hi this was just an opinion seeking question I had heard that it could have an effect on the scores though have no experience to prove it either way and just wondered if anyone else knew.I dont have anyone due to be hipscored at the moment as my older bitches are done and the pup is only 16 weeks old. Thanks for the replies

I was told by a veterinary expert in this field that the best time to score in mid way between seasons, don't know why though.

I was told to do hip score midway between seasons as well. Can't remember the reason, but I do it anyway.

I was also told this and I can't remember the exact reason either  Don't quote me, but isn't it something to do with the pelvis/hips 'adjusting' in preparation for a pregnancy?

I thought half way between seasons as well. Either something to do with lax joints during the season, or lower risk of anaesthetic between seasons - can't remember which
