As you may have read on my other post, Tara went into the vet's on Thursday to have her foot x-rayed under sedation. Since then she has been eating OK, but is very flat - she is not very interested in anything and has to be coaxed to come out for a short walk. She spends most of the day lying under a table or in a corner somewhere. She does manage to join in the barking if someone rings the doorbell - but she isn't right :( I don't think that she is in pain - could she just be fed up with her bandaged foot and not being able to run around as before she broke her toe ? I'm not sure whether to ring the vet tomorrow - she is due to go back on Thursday to have the bandage changed.
Has anyone had a depressed dog ?

Think I would be seeing the vet if my dog was depressed, always think that is how you tell when something is wrong as opposed to just off colour. It may well be because she is fed up with her foot but I would want it checked out, it could just be discomfort and if it is I would expect my vet to do something about it.

Thanks, Jackie - I will definitely ring them tomorrow. She has been OK for 5 weeks with the bandage - it has been difficult to stop her charging around the garden - albeit on 3 legs, but now she is unusually quite, except for barking at the doorbell. I didn't worry too much Friday and Saturday as she had had the sedation, but as she is still like it today, it's got me worried (although I'd be even more so if she wasn't eating). She can be a bit moody - it's not unusual for her to sit in the utility room, facing the washing machine when she's having a sulk :D - but that never lasts too long.
I'll ring the vet in the morning

One of my dogs had a foot bandaged for some weeks (toe amputation) and when he went quiet like that we knew we had to change the dressing PDQ because his foot was getting damp and sore.

Thanks JG - it could be that the splint under the bandages is not quite in position and is sore
Daisy

Ooh yes, if that's slipped slightly (swelling doing down or something) then it'd rub.

Rang the vets this morning - of course I had totally forgotten that Tara had her booster injections while she was in on Thursday :( The vet thinks that she has just had a reaction to them and to ring them again tomorrow if she isn't any brighter. Just hope that this is the case

Took Tara to the vets this morning. They don't really know what the problem is - they don't think that it's a reaction to her boosters and can only suggest that she is fed-up with all the 'messing around' that she has had the last 6 weeks :( She is now refusing to come for walks and is not eating a lot :( The vet says that they will leave her current bandage on for 2 weeks and then that will be it, so I just hope that she perks up then.
I was given some Arnica last night to help with the healing of her toe - but I'm not sure how to give it to her. The instructions that I was given was to tip it into her mouth - but she is not co-operating and I'm loathed to force her mouth open. Any suggestions - the 'pills' are tiny - but they can't be given with food.
Thanks

If a dog will NOT take them then it is possible to give them with food but it is not so efficacious (I like that word) :D
I crush my homoepathic tablets in a fold of paper and then sprinkle on tongue. I really would not worry about opening her mouth; just pull a lip to one side and pop it in.

Did she cheer up at all when you took her to the vet, or can you stimulat her at all?

Thanks, Thome - I will give that a go :)
Jackie - she joined in the barking vocally when my husband came home this evening, had a stroke - but then just went straight back to lying down. She spent most of the morning lying in the garden - daughter tried to get her interested in something, but no luck. We've tried playing a little game of catch - she doesn't even try to catch the ball. She won't go and fetch her baby gorilla - which she will normally do as soon as we tell her. She did come for our walk this morning - but only went about 5 yards into the field (which is next to our house), did what she had to and then sat down on the path.
The vet did say that she was 'feisty' today when he changed her bandage - which is unusual :)

Well I'm not a vet but I think she is in pain and P*ssed of with it. May be one more week and she will get rid of the bandage and may be cheer up.

Thanks for that - you've cheered me up a bit if not Tara :)
Will just have to wait and see
