Topic Dog Boards / General / Hypo Allergenic, please help
- By Merlin [gb] Date 12.07.04 18:38 UTC
Hi
I have a dog who is very allergic to meat proteins and the like. She is currently eating a veterinary formula made by Purina which is bascially small white pellets of food which are very bland and contain nothing even remotely meaty/fishy etc.

The problem is, I would like to buy her treats, everything I can find in the shops contains some form of meat protein etc and she therefore cannot eat that.
If anyone knows of anything, please please could you let me know
Thanks in advance

Just a thought, but you could always have a go at making your own - at least you'll know for sure what's in them. Could always post for recipes?

Hope you find something

Hi Merlin, what about things like apple and carrots, my dogs love these as a treat. Also cherry tomatoes, swede etc.

That's all the low/no protein treats I can think of at the mo...

WHat exactly has she been tested to be allergic to?

Thank you all for your replies.
She is alergic to meat and fish proteins.

The veggies are a good idea. Also, will have a dabble on Google.....see if there is anything around.
Poor soul, its a very boring life for her. She is 7 months old and only got hair when she was almost 5 months old. She has peeling raw skin, was eating into her legs, almost died. Food allergy was a last thought.

Thanks again

If she is allergic to meat and fish proteins then the only complete proteins available to her are soya and egg and dairy products.

Soya is problematic for dogs being a thyroid inhibitor and it tends to make other nutrients unavailable as well as causing gas.  Eggs are the perfect food so no problem there so no doubt she can eat egg and rice formulae.  Dairy products are difficult because dogs are lactose intolerant which can be overcome to some extent by feeding a digestive enzyme containing lactase.

There are complete vegeterarian diets out there and also egg and rice diets.  And of course the hypo allergenic diets which hydrolyse the protein molecules and prevent them from causing an allergic reaction.

All fruits and veg can be treats and you could make treats out of soya/tofu etc.
