Before we go to bed around 11.30pm we let him out and then I am up at 5am, when I also let him out.  The problem with him is that in the day he goes to the door and scratches, but then I ask him if he wants to "wee wee", he will bark, we say this to him every time he goes to the door and he barks.  At night if he wants to go, he probably scratches at the door (but obviously we do no hear), but then just goes on the floor.  This morning he had done 2 wees and a poo.  I am thinking about putting something on the door that will make a noise, I read one of the polls and someone was using a bell.  In the evening if the door isn't open and I am in the sitting room he will go on the floor in the kitchen.  Now he is older I do not get up every time he moves as sometimes he just goes for a drink or for a mooch about.
