My 10 month flattie bitch has been having very runny poohs for a week.I tried starving her for 24 hours but it didn't work so took her to the vets yesterday. He thinks its colitis and has prescribed salazopyrin 1.5 tablets three times a day.I had to starve her yesterday but today she has had a couple of meals of rice/boiled egg on vets advice. She has just been out and done another runny pooh.Looking at the other posts on this topic the tablets usually work quite quickly.Just wondered if anyone else had any similar experiences? She is fine in herself and is hungry but im getting a little worried about my dog.Any help very welcome.
Thanks

Have you tried contacting the breed health committee? I don't have Brenda Phillips email address here but I think it is on the Flatcoated Retriever Society website. They may know of other flatcoats with this condition and therefore may be able to help with suggestions for your dogs care. You could always ring Brenda Phillips as I have done in the past.

My Westie was diagnosed with Collitis over a year ago and was prescribed Salozopyrin, which he is still on he has a quarter of a tablet 3 times a day. I had hell with his diet, he was prescribed Hills ID food which worked for a bit but then it was a disaster.
On these boards I was recommended Naturediet Lite. and this worked in a day and he has been on this ever since and although he's still on medication his system is perfect.
You will find that although the medication helps it is the food that will cure it.
Try Naturediet Lite with the tablets and stick to this only nothing else I'm sure you will see an improvement.
Let me know how you get.

Yes ND Lite is one of the only foods that controls my eldest Labs colitis.

We tried everything and were at one stage considering PHTS as she was so thin and emaciated even after trying medication and changes of diet but we turned the corner through first trying JWB and although she gained weight still had very runny poos and couldn't control herself.Although she does have her moments on ND Lite she is coming upto 14 years old and still has a lot of life left in the old dog yet ! ;) :)

Thanks for all your help.I'm going to fing a local supplier of naturediet and see how she goes.Today she showed some improvement so hopefully once i take her off the rice and eggs and onto naturediet she will continue to improve.I will try the flatcoat websites too and see if there's any info that might be useful.
Fingers crossed for my little girl!
