Okay today in park off lead Sal and I playing ball :) when a Xbreed black dog similar size to Sal appeared out of nowhere and ran up to Sal then turned and ran away..towards his owner..Sal gave chase the chase appeared to be fun and friednly but leading toward the road so I called Sal back she turned faster than I have ever seen her (when playing with another dog) and charged back to me..with the other dog trailing behind. As she approachs me NORMALLY she veres off runs round behind me then back, not today she ran straight for me and crashed me to the ground then preceeded to lick me. I am not hurt but why this sudden change of recall behaviour...anyone would think I had been out of sight for about 10 hours instead of 10 seconds.
If nothing else at least it proves she does come back ;)

I would say the reason she came back so swiftly was the panic in your voice because you were worried about the road. This is why, when we teach instant downs at class, we always tell the owner to put as much panic in their voice as is possible, the same with recall, if the dog is coming slowly then run and keep looking back to see that the dog is coming fast. :) Well done you and your dog for responding so quickly. Now you just have to work on the stop and sit before being flattened. :):)
Sal's living up to the breed reputation as "nanny" dogs then, escorting the other dog to safety then comforting you after your scare. She licks cause she cant say " There, there its alright now " :)

LOL reminds me of a time long ago when I was trying to improve the present of the dumbbell with one of the GSDs, I must have yelled 'close' with such determination that she hit me in the pit of my stomach I thought she had broken my pelvis and we finished the exercise with me in tears and her with a dazed expression. And no it did not improve her performance afterwards think my flinching every time on her return did not help.

Lorelei you could be right but the poor "hit and run victim." Is dubious of reliving the experience :) ;)
But jumbuck you could have hit the nail on the head with the "panic" in my voice. Because I was very very aware of the road and the way the playing was going. As the lady and man walking the other dog said "they had never seen a dog turn so fast"
Sal normally comes back on walks now and checks I'm still there so to speak, and nuzzles my hand or jumps up to be stroked. At almost 19 months I figure the training and hard work I have put in up to now is coming to fruition and I for one am pleased - I just object to being laid flat on my back in the park to prove it :D
Normally she comes back and when told to sit she will but as you say it must have been the panic in my voice.
And Jackie I am glad my Sal was not carrying weapons such as a dumbell :)
