We have bought some thin sheet steel to use as splashbacks in the kitchen and we are a tad unsure about the best way to cut it to size and what tools to use ? We need to be able to cut straight lines length and width ways and also bits for sockets etc . So has anybody got any good experience of doing this as we are a bit unsure about the best way to go about doing this !

Sheet steel from B&Q 1x0.5m .

If it is sold for kitchen use I think it must be stainless steel or it would rust, if it is it is very hard to work with, mild steel can be cut with shears or hack saw but stainless need to be cut on a guillotine. Why don't you ask B & Q they are very help full and may even cut it for you.

If you have any local sheet metal companies I would suggest taking it to them with measurements of cuts etc they usually have laser cutters, although B&Q may cut it or sell something to do this.
