Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Pregnancy has come to an early end :-(

Sadly my girl  has absorbed her whole litter at 7 weeks pregnant.  I noticed over the past couple of days that she seemed to be getting smaller, she stopped eating and today she started crying and whining a lot.  We took her to the vet had her scanned and she confirmed the litter was no more.  I am completely gutted, after the bad start we had, its been one heck of a roller coaster ride.  She is now on 2 courses of anti-biotics due to the 9 pups she was carrying we have to take her back to the vet on Wednesday when she will decide what to do next.  Either spay or continue with medication.  Her white cell blood count was Normal/high so she is bordering on an infection, but I'm hoping and praying that the medication she is taking now will stop it going any further.

Will let you know how we get on later in the week

A completely drained Sharon :-(

I'm so very sorry this happened. I feel your pain in your post. I may have missed if you wrote of earlier problems in her pregancy, but did anything happen (ie; infection) earlier on that may have lead to the absorbsion?

Again I'm so sorry.

Just an update:

My girl has started delivering her dead babies,  it is just so sad, she delivers and I have to remove it, she goes absolutely mad, crying, barking, jumping all over me, she is just so stressed at the moment and I don't know what to do for her :-(

I can't take her out too far as she is constantly dropping 'green' discharge and being orange roan it tends to notice quite a bit, I'm just hoping and praying that it will all end soon and she will get back to normal.

A physically and emotionally drained Sharon

Sharon,

I can only imagine how hard this must be for you and her. I hope it will all be over with soon. Hopefully soon you'll have some good memories to replace these sad days.

Oh Sharon,im so sorry for you and your girl,i had everything crossed for you both :0( I only hope that by the time you get to read this, the worst will be over and you and your girl will be feeling a bit brighter, its so sad and dissheartening,it really makes us all realise the realities of breeding that anything can and does go wrong,it not always plain sailing.

Thanks everyone for your wishes.  My girl is a little quieter this afternoon, she hasn't delivered any more pups, just lots of green, very thick discharge.  My vet thinks that the rest of the litter are being reabsorbed, so she hopefully won't pass anything recognisable as pup!  We have to go back to the vet on Monday, for yet another blood test to check her white cell count, fingers crossed her levels will have dropped slightly due to the anti-biotics and what she has expelled.  I think once she has the all clear from the vet, she can rejoin the rest of my girls and hopefully it will put her mind off what has happened.

Thanks again
Sharon

I am so sorry Sharon. I feel so bad for you. Did the vet have any idea why this happened?

The vet isn't really sure, but a possibility is because she was bleeding all the way through, she thinks that her cervix hadn't closed completely, if that was the case, then she was open to any slight infection..........so even though we didn't notice anything different she may have had an infection which got into her womb and killed the litter :-(

Also another possibility is Canine Herpes, apparently this is now becoming more common than people realise, it can be the cause of fading puppy syndrome.  There is a vaccination for this, so next time one of my other girls is mated, we'll be having this just as a precaution.  There is a blood test to confirm canine herpes but it costs £200 as the blood sample has to be sent to America.

Thankfully yesterday my girl actually ate something, this was the first since last Saturday!  My vet said because she only expelled 4 pups, that her body had a lot of protein to reabsorb, which is why she wasn't eating, so hopefully this is a good sign that things are finally clearing up!
