Seeing as I cant get a password to join am trying my question again as a Guest!
I have a miniature poodle, 14 months old, want to feed him a good moist food, I read that some people dont like Pedigree Pouches, not read anything on PAL pouches but presume they are more or less the same. He won't eat dry food and to be honest I would prefer to feed him a good moist food. Would be grateful for some advice

Naturediet; moist, vacuum packed dog food that contains only meat, rice, carrots and bone; the best moist food you can get in the UK today IMHO.

Agree with Tohme - I use Naturediet for my dogs - I think it's better than tinned foods, and the dogs love it.  Check out the website: www.naturediet.co.uk.  I usually order 8 cases at a time, and delivery is free.

My two are Naturediet fans also- where they used to be picky eaters, now their meals are gone in a matter of seconds! :D  Great food IMO :)

With respect to Naturediet - I have looked at the website and notice that protein is 10% - am new to all this so please be patient!!! - some of the other foods that I have looked at have a higher protein level, I do obedience with my poodle and have been told that the higher protein the more enery they have. Am not sure if this is true or not!

You are making a common mistake made by the majority of pet owners; not understanding exactly what the food label tells you.

To correctly calculate the protein content in any food (wet or dry) you must first remove the moisture content from the equation.  Naturediet is 75% moisture; then you must look at the protein %age on the pack; Naturediet varies from 7 - 12% depending on the variety; divide the %age of protein by the dry matter and multiply by 100 this will give you the ACTUAL protein %age which is as follows:

7/25 x 100 = 28% protein,
10/25 x 100 = 40% protein,
12/25 x 100 = 48% protein

Very few dry foods will contain these levels of protein.

Also the level of protein has nothing to do with energy levels.

Energy is provided by total calorific value of the food; so if you want lots of energy, theoretically you are looking at calorifically dense foods such as fats etc.

As obedience competitions only require the dog to totter round a tiny ring for approximately 10 minutes at the very most (at Ch C level); your dog will not really need the energy levels of a working gundog or sled dog for example!

Hope this clarifies things for you.

For those of you who wish to compare Naturediet protein levels against Burns and are unfamiliar with the protein and moisture content, the latter do several varieties which contain 18.5/20/21/24% protein and the moisture level of Burns is 9% Therefore:

18.5/91 x 100 = 20% protein
20/91 x 100 = 22% protein
21/91 x 100 = 23% protein
24/91 x 100 = 26% protein

So you can see by these calculations that the highest protein levels in Burns (26%) is still lower than any of the Naturediet varieties.

Hope this is of help to those of you who are comparison shopping for protein levels :D

Couldn't see any link to buying it direct?
- By tohme Date 09.07.04 16:00 UTC
http://www.naturediet.net/stockist_locator/index.html

not sure you can order it direct but the above link has a list of stockists; you can find it easily in Pets at Home etc.

Don't think there is an actual link to buying direct - all I do is fax them my order, or you could phone, and I pay by Switch card.  Delivery usually seems to be about 3 days later.
