Why does my 14month old bitch dig? She digs the bed covers at least three times per night, she digs the soil when we go camping. She burys things (mainly her bones) but she does this by pushing with her nose not by digging. She just jumps on the bed and digs furiously until I've had enough and get her to stop.

Why does my 14month old bitch dig?
Because she is a dog.

It's a dog thing! One of mine buries herself in her blankets at night ...
I suppose I asked for that blunt answer, I meant is there a reason. I know they dig to bury bones but just digging for no reason but to make a mess of the bed covers.

Most dogs I have known (mine and those of other people) seem to reckon that a smooth blanket is not right! I'm sure every person rearranges their bedding during the night (turning the pillow, reclaiming some quilt etc) when it is uncomfortable - I just expect they do the same.

In the wild a dog would dig to hide uneaten food for later consumption, extract small prey animals and insects from their holes, make a 'bed' to sleep & have pups in, extract roots and plants to eat etc etc.
Your dog is probably enacting one or many of these behaviours. Or perhaps she is just having fun!

My Puppy does the same, I think its really funny to watch him digging the bed cover. I get this picture in my head of him on a treadmill, head down, ears flapping and digging like mad and still he gets nowhere.

You think you have problems, mine bury 'themselves' in the garden, no really, holes so big that they disappear. Have always thought in their case it was in place of snow, with most dogs I suppose the 'digging' action is to make a scrape to lay in, to help keep the wind off.
LOL@ Jackie
Mine 'buries' food all day long. She is consantly moving old treats/chews around from place to place, down the cushion, on her bed, little corners...it sounds like she gets lots of treats and chews, she doesn't, she just spends a couple of minutes eating them at first then three weeks shuffling them around the house until I think I can get away with binning them because she's never going to eat them again ;-).
When she does it to her bed before settling down, I just look on it as 'making the bed'. I make my bed before I get in it and she does the same. I love watching her do it :-D

My first dog (ironically named Digger ;)) used to only dig his holes in the summer - to expose damp soil which must have been more cooling.....

Mine digs for joy and oh boy does he love an indoor riding school! Poo AND sand? Get stuck in! :) Morse also assists with gardening - any plant not conforming to his design in terms of colour or texture gets dug up or weed on until it dies. So far Ive lost a yellow Potentilla, part of a cotoneaster hedge and a physalis. Will he deliver me from that blessed Montbretia, no!
