Can anyone please tell me if there is a breader of American Indian dogs in the UK? Many thanks. John Doig (johndoig@ntlworld.com)

Anyone know what this dog may be, the only time I have heard it before was in a Cowboy and Indian film but don't think it would be allowed now as the remark refered to the native Americans.

I'm afraid that my American-published Atlas of Dog Breeds makes no mention of such a breed. Many American breeds, but none going by those names. There is the 'Mountain cur' which is believed to be vaguely similar to the 'Indian cur', but it is not a recognised breed, even in its native country. It is not recommended as a family pet. Sorry.

Guess it must have been some sort of camp dog, would love to know what it was/is. Wonder where the guest heard of it and why out of all the dogs in the UK they want one we have not heard of. :)

Remember reading a few years ago in one of the dog mags about someone who imported a pair into Scotland and was planning to breed them. They looked gorgeous, and believe she was interested in starting up a society for them. Think they may have been also called Indian Singing dogs? Off to look on Google now!

American Indian Dog - These dogs were selectively bred by the plains Indians for thousands of years. Natural hunting companions, these dogs were also used for herding and guarding the campsites of the nomads. The coyote-like appearance is of no coincidence. Many tribes continued to breed their dogs back to their coyote cousins to maintain survival instincts, pack loyalty and high intelligence qualities. While today's dogs retain the desired traits of their ancestors, those traits remain because of careful breeding programs and research rather than introduction of primitive stock. American Indian dogs should not be confused with coyote or wolf hybrids.

Hello John
Yes, there was a breeder in Cardigan, West Wales a few years ago but I think she has moved on. I did go to visit when she had a litter. Most charming dogs with wonderful temperaments and superbly agile.
There is some question over whether they are actually descendants of the American tribal dogs but from photos I've seen, they do bear a resemblance.
If you email the American breeder who "resurrected" the breed, you should find any UK breeders. Look here - http://www.indiandogs.com/index.htm

Well would be interested to hear more especial as the one on the woman's lap looks like a Elkhound/GSD cross although a bit on the small side. The red one does not look so much like the Elk, bigger ears and more like the Finnish Spitz although without seeing better and standing views it is hard to really tell. Would love to know more about the original dogs and if these really are from the originals or as someone said a 'recreation' .
Just taken a look at the old art work and it would seem that there was more than one type of dog, all look spitz like, which is not much of a surprise but some look Siberian and others more like the Eskimo or Greenland dogs. There are also smaller lighter ones more along the lines of the Finnish Spitz. Lets hope someone can come up with more information about the original tribes dogs would be interesting to see how similar to our own breed they are, mind you I don't think the people at the origins of the North European dogs had horses, well at least not to start with

I love that website (LOL)
A random collection of mongrels, a random collection of horses and some random stumpy tailed tabby cats!
Rare & exotic breeds! Am I missing something? ;-)

Have to say, have just been for a look at the dog pictures and I wondered which of the several examples was supposed to be true to the breed standard? They are all different :D
