Hello,

I have been looking into getting a Cane Corso puppy for some time and have finally decided to go for it. Unfortunately there seems to be a mass of very strange people breeding these dogs and very few good breeders. After speaking to 3 people with cc pups available and being told that they don't need hipscored as they can run really fast and jump a 6' gate,  they also don't need registrations as they have the best possible bloodlines and can set me up with stud dogs etc.
The best one was that I could have a bitch pup for £700 without papers or if I paid an extra £1000 he could sort me out some papers!!!!!!!!
I'm just really curious as to where these nutters got there poor dogs from???   Surely they didn't do the masses of research to import themselves and what breeder in there right mind would let one of their puppies go to these people.
I am just worried that this breed is going to get into real trouble before it's even begun or is this just one of those things that happens when a breed is reletively new or rare in this country????

I'm afraid so, Debbie. :( When something is new it becomes the latest 'must-have' and all the wrong people jump onto the bandwagon to make a quick buck while the fashion lasts. Think of all pirated CDs, videos, clothing etc. Sadly to these people dogs come into the same category.

Later on the true fans (and there are good, responsible breeders out there) will be left picking up the pieces.

Hi Debbie, think you will find a lot of people on this forum who will share your worries, it is not just the Cane Corso that seems to being bred for any reason but the welfare of the dogs. No matter what breed if they are not bred with care they finish up with either health or temperament problems and in a lot of cases both.

Can't help you in your search, is there a breed club in Europe that may be able to suggest someone in the UK that is breeding responsibly. So many of those being advertised seem to be aimed at the sort of person that requires a guard dog, for what ever reason, and the aim seems to be the bigger the better.

Hope you have luck in finding what you want from people who care about the breed, as I am sure the breed will need as many caring people like you as it can get if it's reputation is not to be ruined. To tell the truth I know little of the breed, think it originated in Sicily and was then 'recreated' but I do not know by whom or where, can you tell me anything of it's history or point me to a useful site, mind you if you knew of a good useful site you would not be asking in the first place, sorry :)

Hi All,

Thank-you for your replies. Don't get me wrong I have spoken to a couple of really good breeders who seem to want to do there very best for the dogs and do all the relevant health checks etc and are extremely picky about who has there babes.  I have my name down on their waiting lists.

I am still confused as to where these other people got there CC's from!  Ok I'm probably just having a blond moment but I am assuming that they must have been bred by one of the better breeders or those that first imported them to this country. I'm also assuming that they were sold with contract etc but these people have just decided to totally ignore all of that and breed anyway. That is why no registration papers are available. I have heard in America it is quite common to neuter pups before they are rehomed, although it seems like a horrible thing to have to do to a little baby. Would this not be the answer??? Or is there a way to make sure that any pups rehomed are definately neutered at say 6-7 months of age???
A couple of good sites with lots of info are www.canecorso.org, www.canecorsoitaliano.org and www.corsoluv.com , Sorry I don't know how to do the link thingy.

Can I just say - I didn't know what this breed looked like until I looked at one of the websites mentioned and what a handsome breed of dog!!

It is not just the CC who is subject to being bred for reasons other than the improvement and well being of the breed. It happens to some extent to all breeds, but in a newly introduced breed can be the ruin of that breed. A few examples of which involved in biting incidence or victims of ill health will, in the end, dam the whole breed in this country. Very sad but it has happened before to breeds that appeal to the, shall we say, exocentric.
