Topic Dog Boards / Health / Reason for vomitting

My sister's mini schnauzer has a very sensitive tum but since he has been put on Burns he seems to be doing a lot better.  The problem is that more recently, he has been vomitting his food up, immediately after eating.  She feeds him 3 small meals a day because of his sensitivity.  He isn't excited before he eats and she only walks at least an hour after feeding.  It seems to happen more in the morning.  She has also stated that he seems to be more "windy" than usual as well.  My initial reaction was that he is bolting his food down and intaking a lot of air with it so I advised her to feed the morning meal in a few small portions to slow him down.  I am not an expert here perhaps there are some other thoughts as to what the problem might be.

For a dog to vomit on occasion is normal but if this dog is repeatedly vomiting I think that a vet should check the dog out for infection or obstruction. If all is clear then perhaps the present food does not suit him and you should try something else.

I agree with Jackie H

You could also try soaking the food first maybe that might help :) Maybe like she said you may have to change the food. How long have you been on the dog food? Maybe try one for sensitive stomaches.

My sister changed to the food a few months back.  Previously he had become sensitive to Eukaneba and now he is on Burns which he has done really well on.  She has been soaking it and is going to try it without water so that he crunches the biscuits rather than swallowing whole.  I hadn't thought about him becoming sensitive to the food because he vomits immediately after eating i.e. before any of it has digested.  It isn't every time just every now and again.

Did she just change the food, or work into the dogs diet? If she just changed it, this may be the reason the dog is vommiting. If you take him to the vets, if it is this, then the vet will say to starve the dog for 24 hours, give you some lubricating gel to swallow (to help bowel movement) and some tablets to settle the dogs stomach. After this, the dog should be fine.

Best to go to the vets though, just to make sure theres no other problems. :)

Continual vomiting after food should be investigated by the vet, it could be a sensitivity but it may be a malformation of some kind that needs treatment.

She changed the food after trying for a long time with Eukaneba.  She changed it over quite a long period to avoid any shock to the system.  His poos etc have been much better now that he is on Burns and his scratching has stopped.  As for the vomitting, it is not continual, it is every now and again.  Three times in the last 9 days.  She then feeds him again straight after and he is fine.    If it happens again in the next few days she is going to take him to the vet.  Thanks for the help

Is the dog being exercised just before or after being fed or may be allowed to play hard? If so try keeping the dog calm for half hour before and an hour after the feeding and see if that helps. This type of food return is common in dogs but not with any frequency unless there are young pups about.

Jackie, no he isn't exercised just before or after.  He is quite calm.

Think a word with the vet is in order just to make sure that nothing is wrong, dogs can develop the most bizarre of habits, if vomiting gets him special treatment or special food then who knows, it could be a learned habit. But a check up is best done first before trying to decide if it is something else.

Thanks Jackie, the next time he does it she is taking him to the vet for a check up.
