Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / bitches seasons...
- By Guest [gb] Date 04.07.04 20:13 UTC
i was wondering at what age a large breed female SHOULD have her first season?
Say a bitch didnt have her first season until she was 2, could she be bred on her first season.

I am curious as to what the answers are, and i will appreciate your help.

Thanking you in anticipation

I would say no, on the basis that a) she is only just old enough (ethically) to mate even if she had been having seasons since she was 6 months and b) her hormones may not be 'normal' and a mating may not be successful. I would wait till her second season.

I would also be concerned if the bitch had not come into season before this time. Some bitches are very late but 2 years is exceptional. That is not to say that there is a problem, I cannot help wondering if maybe she had a mild season earlier but had cleaned herself up? Question for you, How experienced are you, could she have had a season without you noticing? Failing this, I would be thinking about getting her checked out before thinking about breeding just in case.

Regards, John
