Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / constipated pup/single?

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to recuperate from this whelping. still up alot at night with now the singleton puppy. she is beautiful. she's doing well but she seems to be constipated. she was crying for one day and wouldn't eat but as soon as I stimulated her enough she felt better and ate. The mom will stimulate her to pee but that's it . She doesn't like the taste! I finally took the tip of a thermometer and that made her go but it has been pretty hard for a puppy.  Her stomach seems big to me but she is also chubby. She was 2lbs 4 oz this morning. for a boxer pup at 6 days that is double what they usually are!
If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. Have any of you ever had this happen?
Thank you

Is the pup not pooping at all? If so the pup may need an enima from the vet. not sure but can you give mineral oil to help the puppy poop?

Hi
One of my girls is a terrible mother and will not clean her babies at all!
Both litters she has had have developed constipation - even though i stimulate them at every meal.
I used syrup of figs which you can get from any pharmacy, it is ok for very small babies and worked a treat on the puppies, its natural and very gentle.  You will need a 1ml syringe and begin giving 0.1ml if this doesn't work after six hours try 0.2ml etc until you find the correct dose.  Only re administer if they become constipated again.
Good luck

I'm in the USA and no one here has ever heard of it. would it be under some other name?
- By Puppycat Date 04.07.04 11:13 UTC
The brand name is Califig and is manufacured in the uk by Merck Consumer Health - perhaps they don't export to the us but i would think you can get something similar over there.  The ingredients are just 2.5mg senna per 5ml of syrup plus extracts of malt, ginger, figs and various oils.  They should sell it next to the ordinary senna tablets, in the uk it is over the counter though and not in general sale, so perhaps you need to ask at the pharmacy.

thanks for the info on the syryp. i checked with a number of pharmacies the other day and no one has ever heard of it. i called health food stores and they didn't either. too bad because it sounds so good. I gave something called benebac (good bacteria for puppies) last night and she did go a little this morning. I've also been giving mineral oil. I'm still working on it. she doesn't cry so she isn't too uncomfortable. but she is bloated. some of it is fat. she is such a big girl. i can't believe mom won't clean that area but will clean to make her pee.

do you all know how much mineral oil would be ok to give. I've just been giving a couple of drops twice a day. i would like to increase it but I don't want to cause a vitamin deficiency problem either.

I know I gave about a quarter of a tsp to my boston puppy at about 4 weeks of age and he weighed about 4 pounds, I gave that to him 2-3 times a day (depending how his poo was) just to keep his poo soft cause he had a rectal prolapse (still does). Maybe best to ask your vet how much and how often you can safely give it to the little one. I still have my puppy and now I only give him the mineral oil if he needs it, I also use medimucille I just mix that in with canned dogfood. So far he seems to be doing fine with out it.....Hope your little guy gets better :) Did ur vet give him an enema to clean him out so he isn't too gunged up? Good luck :)

What is rectal prolapse?. i'm not real happy with the my vet right now. his partner was suppose to call me and he didn't. the technician was the one that mentioned the mineral oil.
I'm going to increase it. Thank you

A rectal prolapse is when the but itself is hanging out kinda looks like a red cherry, we did a purse string that helped some but he still has his little bum part sticking out. Most breeders would of just had him pts but he seems to be doing fine and runs, plays, eats, bathrooms ok other wise still a happy dog and well if it ever causes him great problems thats when we will decided if his quality of life is still enjoyable.

Hows ur little one doing today? :)

She is doing better. She goes now when I stimulated but does anyone know how much they are suppose to go in a day? She is so chubby I try to roll her on her side because her chest flattens a little when she stays on her stomach. She is FAT! I guess it's because she's the only one. Her eyes are starting to open and she is starting to stand. I can't believe she's 12 days already. I am still getting up at night because she will start crying if she has to go to the bathroom. Tiring for a one puppy litter!

Hi If you PM me with your address, i'll try and send a bottle over - it's not very expensive and should last a year or two, only problem is you won't get it for a week - hope that's not too late for your baby :-(

I've seen Califig syrup this week in Morrisons and Tescos  on the lower shelves with the rest of the supplements/ medications.  Its more than likely that its on sale in supermarkets in the US too.

Hope this helps

Thank you. I'm still going to look. She was doing better but now she is bloated again. she doesn't cry or anything. the mineral oil helped so i'm going to start that again. I can't remember--when do they start going on their own. I can't wait!
