Please help, anyone who may have anything on this subject that may be "helpful"
I have been breeding dogs for sometime now.. I would say I am experienced, but I am sure there are alot more out there more experienced than I.
I had a litter affected by a virus last year, one litter in between with no problems and now a litter that is a week old, coming down with a similiar virus again (smelly diarreah). When I asked the vet what can be done about it to help with future litters I got a "it can happen and there is not much you can do" Well I cannot accept that answer easily... There must be a reason why these litters are getting diarreah and dehydrating... I had some of my puppies, from my litter last year on drip for a week and then the all clear and the entire litter pulled through with no problems...
These babies are a week old and again that smell is starting ...
my puppies are reared inside the household, with little contact to the outside world. I never go anywhere to have picked up anything (if I do, my clothes are changed immediatley and my footwear is disinfected, what more can one do??) so I am wondering if something is laying dormant in my dogs that is affecting the little ones? (All my dogs are wormed regularly, up to date jabs and are happy and healthy)
I have heard mentioned that an injection at the time of mating does help a healthier litter? Any help or advice will be gratefully received!
Thanks to all who can lend a hand.

Not sure if your puppies are to young to have this, have you asked your vet about the possibility of them having Giardia? a tiny parasite that infects the intestines and produces a foul smelling diarrhea with often a waxy appearance containing blood. I always start worming my puppies at 2 weeks old, mum is always given panacur from 40 days of pregnancy.

No blood in stool, but smelly, I clean and clean and still cannot rid the smell of that sickly smell... it worries me to death it does... I will however read a bit more about the virus stated. Mom was wormed with Panacur just before whelp, and puppies are only a week old at the moment and too young to worm.
Thanks for your input though, I will be researching and may mention it to the vets...
Kind Regards!
That 'sticky metallic' sort of smell can also be Camphobacta (spelling) but it's possibly not as sinister as these two.
Are they in an enclosed area? If you always rear them in the same place indoors, it could be a bug laying dormant, especially if there is no proper airflow. I know exactly how you feel, I am meticulous but I used to get a recurring tummy bug, I had the whole whelping room tiled from floor to ceiling and an extracter fan put in and had nothing since. There is a product called 'Formula H' made by Petlife which protects from everything.
Sorry to here about your problems, this has happened to a friend of mine befor and what she did was use vercon e i think it is called, it is fantastic you can spray the pups with it the house the frurniture your self and anything, you even wash pups dishes in it, and if anyone comes to the house spray them too. it kills every bug that your normal disinfectant doesnt. it is about £10 to buy and lasts a very long time. it is what is used for foot and mouth. good luck and if you need any more infor on it pls email me.
Think it is VIRKRON, can get it from pet suppliers, etc, I got my from an esquestrian suppliers, comes in little packet forms and also bigger bottles. Was used in Food and mouth crisis...... It has to be diluted down...

Another thing you could try is Trigene (which vets use for cleaning). Your vet should be able to get some in for you.

Hi try

I have found a supplier that I can travel to tomorrow and pick up the Virkon S. I am told this is the one I am after...
I found a website in the end called Antec International, if you sign up for it, it provides all distributors for the UK. Which was very useful.
Now the cost ... Not sure if any of you order this or how much you pay, but to order a 5 kg, it will cost £59.50 or another company quoted me £75 (plus vat) for 10kg.
Bare in mind I have my house and my kennels to do so will need it in a larger quanity. I think the 5 kg one will mix into 500 litres.
Hopefully this will sort out the problem and get my babies back on track with their meds.
Thanks to everyone, it has really helped my day!

You will find your messages in the top right hand corner of this message board page,if you didnt receive it dont worry i was just wondering how you got on with your earlier posting "6 dog rule"and the problems you were experiencing with the council regarding the number of dogs you have?I also suggested that you perhaps try a little live natural yoghurt to dry the loose pups up a bit,it usually works well.Anyway i hope the pups are doing fine now as i know how anxious these first weeks are,i wish sometimes bitches had an 11 week gestation and the pups were born more viable at the 2 week stage as this is such a nerve wracking time, good luck.
