it doesn't matter if she's playing or excited, she constantly nips and chews hands arms fingers etc. in fact anything she can get hold of ! we are covered in small bruises. i was told to use a water pistol this does work sometimes as it shocks her into stopping, although we all end up wet !!! she does't like the word no !
usually she has time out in her pen so she calms dowm. this also works obviously although i dont like to put her in there has it is meant to be a place of sleeping etc, but it does give us respite for a short time. we have treat ball and kongs etc to encourage positive play and stimulation but i wondered if anyone out there has a magic answer. i have been told that borders do nip has this is in their breed. i hope this is just a puppy stage and things will improve soon. any ideas ?

Hi, I am no expert and this is my first puppy. He is now past the chewing stage at 6 months(well fingers anyways), I found that chew toys helped alot as a replacement to fingers, trousers and the like. For me though he was not interested in chewing alone, and every night we would sit together whilst I hold the toy/nyla bone, and after a good chew he would settle down to sleep. During the day I would keep him occupied with playing/training (guess it depends how much time you can spare) housework when he was sleeping, now as soon as the hoover comes out he takes himself to bed for a nap.
It does get better and I had to keep explaining to my son, that "No" doesn't always(rarely) works and to just replace his fingers with his chew toys. Just how it worked for me, worth a try. Managed to save a few puppy teeth from our chewing sessions, although he would have preferred to eat them. Good Luck!

thanks for the ideas,we work on the positives generally and it is usually successful, giving chews to replace fingers etc however it does wear you down after a while. i can relate to the trouser biting, megan starts off playing and attacks the trouser leg bottems as you walk down the garden ,this then turns into a loud growl and very strong pulling, on her part its just playing and having fun. trying to distract her into doing something else is very difficult when you need to get back to the house.her behaviour can be worrying at times. i love her so much and i want her to be a well behaved girl. i try to not fall into bad habits,as i know this can lead into worse things as she grows and learns. the chewing i can cope with, its the constant nipping when being cuddled ,stroked etc which does annoy.this is when she comes to us for attention or if we are already together etc, im sure this is her way of giving affection back as she is such a friendly pup.
all your ideas have been of use thanks for your imput.if you have any further ideas please reply !!!! thanks
I've always yellped like another pup would when my dogs are going through this phase - it takes a while for them to catch on but it works for me!

Hi poppynurse,
thanks for your advice. We do use this method and we make it sound as though we are i n pain, but sometimes she gets excited and starts to, what i call "chatter on my skin" this is still very painful and we end up pulling the limb away and saying no really firmly. Have you experienced this ? i am confident she will grow out of it in time, but isn't it frustrating ? we always try and exchange a chew/toy to sink her very powerful teeth into but this does'nt always work. i think it is trial and error ? consistancy is better but not always able to follow the rules. thanks again, at least i know theres light at the end of the tunnel, WHICH YEAR ?
Border...collie or terrier?
Some pups will get excited by shrieking or uelping; mine did :D I use time outs for a few minutes, and found it was the only thing that helped.

I growl at my pup when he bites and he stops and crouches down all submissive wagging his tail :) I dont know if its right but it works for me.

megan is a border collie pup,she is a lovely dog but ...her teeth are sharp and jaws so powerful. We have a crate that she sleeps in or for time out when she gets too excited and needs a calming down period. We have started to give a quick squeal, and as you say this does seem to work for a short period...a few seconds!! then she tries to slither onto your knee to get back into the good books.she is so clever and able to learn these tactics very quickly, she definetly uses her puppy eyes to get what she wants...this does'nt work for her very often as we have got wise to her. we do love her !
