Topic Dog Boards / General / dog to go with a parson
- By lilylaru [gb] Date 01.07.04 14:22 UTC
i have a very almost 1 year old parson russell terrier (female) and am wanting, in about a year or so, to get another dog (mainly for company for her).

i've heard bad things about terriers together killing each other and things like that and so am not sure what would be the best breed of dog to get.

has anyone had any experience with terriers and other dogs together ? good or bad ? and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

ps. i'd also prefer another female (i've heard bad things about having 2 females together, but my family has always had girls and have never had any problems, and i just like girls for some reason)

I've got a Jack Russell bitch living with my labrador bitches and have no real problems. Labs tend not to fall out with other dogs very easily and will usually back down to the terrier rather than getting into confrontation. I've never experienced my own bitches falling out, but I know it happens with other breeds. I would think that goldens and flatcoats would be equally suitable. You'd probably find that the JR will be the top dog!

I know a few people that mix labs and terriers and I dont know of any that have any particular problems.

Obviously, the decision also has to be based on whether you like and can cope with the new breed - retrievers are very different to terriers, but I'm sure that you already know that. :-)

I've just re-read your original post and would add that I would never get a second dog just for company for the first. I'm not convinced that the relationship with multiple dogs is ever quite the same as one-to-one. (Not necessarily worse, but definitely different!)

I'd only consider buying a second dog if I really wanted that specific breed and dog, and certainly not just for the benefit of the first one. However, once you know what you want, it obviously makes sense to make sure it will get on with your existing dog. :-)

True, owning one dog and owning multiple dogs is a totally different experience, depends I suppose what it is you want from owning dogs.

when living with my family we've always had 2 or 3 dogs at once, and this is my first lone dog. she loves being with other dogs and is in her element when she goes to stay at my mum's with her 2 dogs. i just feel like she's missing out being on her own and always feel awful leaving her alone if i have to go out.

she currently has pretty bad separation anxiety, which we are slowly working on, but not seen much improvement yet. but obviously another dog will not cure this, which is why i don't plan on another dog for at least a year, she's still a puppy herself

Well i have a parson jack russell(3yrs old), a jack russell(5/6 months old), corgi cross(10 yrs) and a whippet(10 months)....all are females and they all get on fine.i would advice if u get another jack russell to make sure u spend enough time with both of them.because one can be jealous of the other etc.  And make sure that ur dog is trained before you go getting another one.coz they do tend to pick up the other ones bad habits. Well hope i helped
