Im looking for some advice please.
A friend has a 10 month old male dog who is a nice loving dog until
he has something and doesnt want to give it up he then becomes a bit nasty.
He "guards" bones paper even his own poo he just wont give it up
and bites.
Can anyone advise what can be done.
He is happy for his food bowl to be moved its just when he has something
he wont give it up fullstop.

The best book on this subject is Mine! a practical guide to resource guarding in dogs by Jean Donaldson which is available from WTM publishing (on the net).  It gives detailed exercises and approaches to resource guarding involving locations, food, objects, people etc.

I would strongly urge your friend to but it and read it carefully and not to use any confrontational techniques with the dog in the interim.  this situation will only worsen if correct intervention is not implemented.
