- By Guest [gb] Date 29.06.04 08:32 UTC
a person told me that staffys get lock jaw
is this true?
i own two staffs and the thought of it is scaring me!
any help

No its not true although it is well thought to be
Think this line of thought comes from the way a Staffy's mouth is shaped allowing him to apply more pressure but the jaw doesnt lock dont worry :)

lol..lockjaw is a disease.staffords do tend to grip and hold when they bite but they can release they just tend not to want to because they are stubborn beggars.

True it is rare, but any dog can get lock-jaw (Tetanus) it is caused by a bacterium that is present in soil and also faeces. Believe that ingesting causes no problem and the infection has to pass into the body through a open wound.

I think tetanus vaccine is included with annual vaccs??

it stems from people believing that when a bull terrier takes hold (of another dog) you need to break the jaw to get them to release the grip..its just ignorance..i think this is what the person means and not the disease.

It is a well versed folk lore about Staffys  ( although untrue i hasten to add)

This is said about pit bulls I belive . not the other bull terrier / terrier types

I've heard it said about all the bull breeds :)

None of them can lock their jaws, it's an urban myth.
