Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Eye Test Question for Litters/Pups
- By Stacey [gb] Date 01.07.04 10:58 UTC
Hi,

I am considering buying a 4 month old Miniature Schnauzer. They are prone to congenital cataracts.  I asked if the parents had been eye tested, the breeder said yes.  I asked if the puppy had been tested, the breeder also said yes.

My question is .. what do I ask for as proof?  I've never owned a breed where eye testing was recommended, so I don't know what I need.  She told me the name of the vet who did the eye-testing, who happens to be the vet is use, but I doubt he'd be willing to tell me anything.

you should get a copy or ask for an eye test report telling you if any defects were found when you purchase the puppy or you go to look at the litter. If you do not recieve that form for any reason or the pedigree is not stamped with a pass / clear for any reason then wait till you can see the document for yourself. Better safe than sorry!

If they were tested under the BVA/KC scheme, the breeder should be able to give you a copy of the certificate. If the whole litter was tested at once under the scheme, she should still be able to give you a copy of the litter screening certificate. Litter screening didn't used to appear on reg. certificates because it was often done before registrations had been rec'd. Things may have changed though. Don't know what the latest age of onset in this breed is but, of course it only means the puppy wasn't affected when tested but is no guarantee that it won't be affected later in life.

Thanks, I will ask and if if the certificates are produced I certainly will not take the pup.

If both parents were tested clear, it will say so on the pup kennel club documents, also the pups kc document will also be stamped with the date etc. of when they had the eye test.   Just ask to see the kennel club registration documents, if they're not stamped then I would say they haven't been tested.
