Is there any way you can stop getting these calls that try to sell you something. We keep gettinh 6 or 7 a day lately either for Space kitchens or something that displays as Internat on caller display. Its driving me nuts:(

Yes, register with the Telephone Preference Service (search on Google) and all will be peaceful in your life. It's great :)

The TPS is free but will not stop all calls, the BT service for "anonymous" calls (eg those that withold their numbers such as charities etc) is £15 per quarter. This means that if someone with a withheld number calls you they get a message saying "this phone will not accept your message". THis does mean a couple of my friends have to phone my mobile :) but it DOES stop all unwanted calls apart from emergency services and banks.

Another way is when you get those yellow electrol (sp) papers that ask who is eligleble for voting there is a box that you can tick that removes your details from the edited electrol register. Anyone can buy the edited version this is one of the ways telesales gets your details. Ive done this as i can't go ex-directory and ive had about 1 call call this year and its free.

Unfortunately even if you go ex-directory a lot of the firms now have computer based dialling (when it is silent when you pick up) that just automatically dial numbers sequentially.....................

We registered with TPS 5 months ago, it takes 28 days to set up, we are ex-directory and for 4 months now, no silent/nuisance/sales
calls...........bliss :-)
We are ex directory and it's great; we do get the odd nuisance call for the people who used to live here 7years ago though!

If you have a block from withheld numbers calling you, and your friends and family have it automatically on their phone. Then tell them to dial 1470 before they dieal, this releases their number and they can call your home number :)
Ive got the witheld calls bared and I had to do this, lol :D
It doesnt cost anything extra to them or you :D

We've got a caller display phone, and to have the caller display service costs £1 per month with Telewest. That way if the number shows as either private or unavailable, we don't have to answer it if we don't want to. We're also ex-directory, and we've also subscribed to the TPS, but they still phone! As for the automatic dialling ones Tohme mentioned.........grrrrrrrrrrrrrr they are really annoying and this practice ought to be banned!

PS As for unsolicited door-to-door callers

I find them just as bad and now just ignore the door bell if I have seen them progressing up the street before they get to us.

My partners idea worked for me.
When these people call just say "No I'm sorry I'm not interested in your product but would you be interested in double glazing/refuse collection/etc. by any chance??".
They couldn't get off the phone quick enough.
Worked for Religious groups as well.
" Sorry my husband is Muslim!!!!!!.
They run a mile.

Well I am a bit wicked too, when I answer I say 'sorry can hear you speak up I am hard of hearing, no sorry can't hear you', and put the phone down, they don't phone back.
The other one is you say 'oh! Good, haven't spoken to anyone for over a week', and then you continue to talk over them reading their msg. all about the hospital visit and what your daughter in law has done, and they put the phone down.

Brilliant, Jackie! ROFL! :D
That gave me a giggle this morning!!! :D

I joined TPS about 3 years ago, and I've just had to join again - I think it's only temporary :( One point to make, is that if you get a call after joining, just say you're a member of TPS and would like the Company name adn number to report them.... strangely enough, the phone goes dead! I think there's a substantial fine for these Companies if they call people on the list :)
Many moons ago, I kept someone talking for 15 minutes - they wanted to sell me a conservatory. I asked all about the materials, how long it would take to order, how long to assemble... the girl was getting really excited about the sale. Then, when she asked when someone could come around to visit, I said there was just one more question - and I asked her how they'd stick it to the side of the building and after listening to her answer I asked if it wouldn't be a bit heavy to have on the side of a block of flats LOL The phone just clicked.....
