Hi folks, I have three (neutered) Chihuahuas of different coat types. I wonder if any of you toy dog people could tell me what happens if a smoothcoat is bred with a longcoat? Do you get a mixed litter & would it be acceptable to show the pups (assuming they were suitable) ?
Thanks for all the great info :)

Although in the old days this used to happen (yes, you did get mixed litters), as far as I know the two coats are now registered as different breeds, so interbreeding them means the puppies cannot be registered and shown.

You do still get throw backs,  I know a Chi litter, smooth to smooth, which produced both coats, earier this year.

Smooth is dominant to long.  Long x long will produce 100% longs.

Smooth x smooth can produce both as Gwen says but only if both parents are long carriers.  If so, every pup born has a 25% chance of  long.  Given the close association of the breeds, I would imagine a large % of the longs are carriers.

oops missed the original question :-)

Long x smooth...if smooth parent carries long pups will have 50:50 chance of L or S.

If it doesn't, 100% smooths.
