Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Panic - please help: bones

Arghhhhh - I'm in a right panic.  Just given my (nearly) 14 week old GSD a chicken wing (raw) and she ate it beautifully, chewed it nicely and didn't gulp.

So, I thought I'd try her on a rib bone (about 3-4" long) which she sat down and chewed for a few seconds and then swallowed whole!!! :-o

I've tried checking down her thought and felt down her neck etc but can't feel it at all.

I am in a right old panic - should I be worried and should I be doing anything?

What sort of rib bone?

Just watch her, most bones either pass through ok or may be regurgitated at some point, some times hours, later.  Observe your dog; if she is eating, drinking, playing, and defecating normally then there should be nothing to worry about.  Dogs do not really chew, they crunch and swallow so there should be nothing to worry about.  Mine swallow loads of stuff whole!

It's a lamb rib.

She downstairs at the moment quite happy looking at me as if I am mad.  She seems to be fine and is looking around trying to hoover up the last crumbs of her brother's bone!  She has drunk some water and so far so good.  I'll give her handful of her normal dry complete tonight to see if she eats and go from there.

Typical though that the first time we thought we'd try her on it then this happens - next time I'm keeping a hold on the other end!!

IT IS normal for dogs to swallow bones of this size whole! :D

I will not panic, I will not panic ;)

Thats right Jayne keep repeating it! :D :D I`ve just been sitting watching my 5+bit week old pups munching thru ch/wings, it`s only their 3rd time & each day there`s even less of the wing than before
She should be fine, but like others say just keep an eye out to make sure :)

Just an update: she is fine this morning. She had a small feed last night as normal, was playing, eating and drinking without any problems. We stayed up late with her just in case but she slept without a problem and wolfed down her breakfast this morning and is still A1.
Hopefully I have got off lightly this time!! It was a lamb rib bone as we had been recommended to try her on one of these first but from now on it's chicken wings for her along with the occassional raw bone that I!!!! keep hold of one end of and she learns not to swallow!

This pup has a stomach of steel!

Thanks everyone

Jayne,
I held the wings etc with a pair of pliers to begin with it gives you a better grip :)

I`ve heard of lots of people on the raw feeding groups using pliers to hold wings etc with, whatever helps eh :)

Better to use pliers than have one of those canines go through your finger - yeouch!!  Actually I do hold mine for my girls, one to keep her from swallowing whole (had to figure out how to carefully hold so she didn't chomp me) and the other because she likes me to hold while she pulls and tears - she uses me for leverage.
