I am picking up my new puppy in 3 weeks time and I was just wondering where shall I put him in the car for our journey home back to my parents house..I have thought of having him in the front with me in the foot well with a blanket or shall I put him in his crate or sit in the back of the car with him.OH will be driving.
How did you bring your pup home in the car?
Jane..
P.s Journey time will be about 3 hours in a renault espace.

My pup sat on my lap but our journey was only half an hour, in the time he dribbled all over me and threw up

Maybe you could start off with him on your lap as he will feel more secure then if he starts getting restless you could put him in his crate ?
When we brought our pup home at Easter, he travelled in a cage in the back of the car. We had a 3 hour journey, and he was actually sick twice on the way home, when we had to stop and change the blanket he was on. Eventually he just settled and went to sleep.

We picked our pup up in January and had a four to five hour drive home. She sat on my knee the whole journey and was sick once. She's never really liked being in the car, although she's much better now.

When we brought our puppy home last october I sat with her on my knee I just wanted to cuddle her to bits im still the same only shes not so easy to lift on my knee now but the cuddles are still the same. Mind the towels kitchen rolls water and bags Enjoy the puppy

We had a 2 hour drive home, we used a crate in the back of the car, she howeled all the way, wasn't sick but we did have a nice runny mess to clean up. she still is not keen on going in the car and she is nearly two now.

When we went to collect Leon I took a big pet carrier with me because I had been told a breeder would probably not let me collect him without one but when asked she said it would be better if he sat on my knee in the back of the car which I was dead chuffed about cos I wanted to cuddle him anyway! Took loads of towels and paper and plastic bags but he was fine. Our journey was about an hour. Maybe ask your breeder what they suggest?

Thanks for all your replys,I have spoke to the breeder and she is most happy for me to have pup on my lap or have him curl up in the foot well on a blanket by my feet. Pup has got to get use to traveling as 3 weeks after picking him up he has got a long car journey back to Germany which takes up to 13 hours so there will be alot of car practice before we leave UK ! :-)

The breeder said the same thing to us, actually - he wouldn't let the pup go without a carrier/crate of some sort. We had an Argos crate in the backseat with lots of towels for him to snuggle into, and I sat next to him. He made one mess (so take extra towels/blankets and some kitchen roll), and then snoozed for the rest of the journey.
we were worried because we didnt have a crate that the breeder wouldnt be happy but we had his small basket on the back seat next to me, which i held onto and he was on my lap for a bit, he was shaking but wasnt sick and didnt have an accident - journey was about an hour and a half

i had a 2hour journey,my friend drove my car & i had flynn on my lap,he cried till we got on to the duall carriage way ,then was fine, wasnt sick or didnt have a wee or anything (but he WAS the perfect pup!!!),once we got to my friends house & dropped her off,i put him in a small cat carrier & strapped it on to the front seat so it was secure but sideways so he could see me & drove the 10mins home like that.

on saturday,i was on my way from one show to another & pulled into the motorway services,& went to park at the Doggy bit at the back & there was a chap holding a lovely beardie pupp on his lap,(sitting in his car with the door open),i backed my car right up the kerb because i was looking at him!!!how embarressing!!!
We've always found that the smallest space and covered up if in a crate is best as the pup should feel secure and not be car sick due to watching the movements from outside. Good Luck whatever you do.:) Ask the breeder if they have taken them out in the car and how they have travelled.

My breeder provided a medium sized crate. That was part of the deal. I don't think she would have been keen on taking him in the car in any other way. It's just not safe to have your pup lose in the car in the event of a sudden stop or accident. I think they're more secure feeling too in it.
Im not sure about the more secure feeling, Leo cannot stand his crate in the car even covered up the movement makes him sick and he looks SO unhappy, he does love his harness on the back seat though. I think keeping the pup next to you on the way back is best, its all so strange to them its nice to have someone near them to give them a cuddle
GreatBritGirl - glad to hear Leo likes his harness after he was so poorly before you got it!!!

we had a two and a half hour drive when we got the dane - he sat in the front of the car with me
he was from the lake disrtict but we met them half way in black pool. he threw up on the old owner twice on the way but on me he just drooled over me all the way home and i was soaked!!
when i got my pup, we only had to travel 40mins so was on my lap wrapped in a blanket....looking all felorn and nervous. Bless. Soon changed when she heard a metal bowl and kibble! Typical labrador!!!!
We had a journey approximately 1hr long on the M25, and I had Millie on my lap on the backseat. She was fine, looking out of the window at this thing called 'the world outside' which she'd never seen before.
I'd spread newspaper on the seat next to me, and I couldn't believe it when near the end of the journey, she climbed off my lap and made her way over to the newspaper, had a wee, and came back. I was so proud!!!
She did puke on the rug shortly after we got home though....lol
