Topic Dog Boards / General / Yankee's coat - Help

Hi

Wonder if anyone has any advice please, i have a beautiful black girl of 14 months who has a lovely thick
heavy coat.

Only trouble is it is wavy and i'm having real trouble straightening it for show time - she looks passable just after bath and blow dry but within 2 hours is crinkly again - aghh!

The coat is in fantastic condition - she is bathed and conditioned every week - wonder if anyone has any ideas about the crinckles! :-)

I depends on the reason for the crinkles - some are just born with the tendency to wave and curl.  However, if you are new to the breed, a problem is often in the way the coat is dried - are you sure you are drying each section of hair right down to the roots?  A common cause of crinkles is not thorough drying of the undercoat, you dry the top beautifully smooth, but dont get the under dry enough, which spoils the smooth effect you have acheived, just a hint of damp can ruin the finished effect.  We always try to make sure we bathe and dry our bunch on the morning of a show, so the coats are freshly prepared in the ring.  However, if all else fails, a lot of people are now using the gas operated straightening irons just before going inot the ring.

hi Sharon.......i'm with Gwen on the drying thing, even the slightest bit of damp can create havoc!!.however,i have found that a human conditioner with anti frizz
formula helps loads especially if the weather is a bit on the damp side (when isnt it !!) i find it does take a little longer to dry as it is a heavier consistancy but the total effect is worth the extra effort. Good luck with it

Hi

It is definately because she is born with a crinckly coat - her breeder who has been fab says she has the worst coat ever and that i've done really well with it.

Yes have also brought the gas straightening irons too but end up with lovely shiny coat with slight wave which looks really bad when the light catches it.

I do dry her totally and have used those anti frizz shampoos conditioners etc - as above she just gets a lovely shiney silky coat with a gentle wave.

Funnily her tummy coat is totally different in texture and dead straight!!

Feel i've tried everything - maybe there is not hope?!?

You could try an intensive oil treatment.  Get some of the hot oil hair conditioners (VO5 or similar, several tubes will be needed), and after application, put her in a bind bag, head sticking out, of course, and apply gentle heat with the hairdryer for about 10 mins, then shampoo and conditon. You can also do this with conditioner (Aussie Miracle is great), after the shampoo stage.  Sadly, some coats just ARE wavy/coarse, often find it in blacks who have Buffs in the pedigree.

Thanks Gwen

Will try that and let you know how it goes

But you're bang on with the pedigree, black mom and buff dad - all USA breeding.

Hi Lea, well first have to admit my ignorance, and say dont actually know exactly where Slovenia is, however, Pugs seems very popular in Eastern Europe - we "borrowed" Rowdy for a year from Poland, and bought Doris fromthe same lady  the following year.  At the world and Euro shows there are always lots of pugs from there(ish).  But, strange you should bring up Slovenia, had an a-mail yesterday from a Lady who lives there about our year book!  Will now have to do a google and see just where it is!

Sharon, hope the heat treatment works, it can be very disappointing when this happens.  Our buff boy had a very "frizzy" coat when he came in last year, but after some of Mikes wonder coat treatments he is looking just gorgeous now:)  I had a little black boy years ago whose coat naturally hung in ringlets.  Some of our dogs where being used to film a commerial, and Titch was acting as a stand in for the black "star" dog, doing camera and lighting set ups - when they wanted him on set they used to send someone to ask for "the dog with the Rasta hair'do"!!!
