People are usualy so worried they don't ask the price but just hope their bitch comes through OK. Would think the price given was an estimate as they would not know how much it would cost until the job was done. It is kind of them to offer to wait until the pups are sold for payment but it would not hurt to question the total of the bill. Jackie h

To compare, last year my bitch had a c.section. She is 30kg,
and had nine pups which one died because it was breeched.
I was charged £250-00. I think £600 is very excessive but then
prehaps your area is high priced on everything. 16 puppies though
what a litter! My husband worked recently for a vet a retired vet.
He was told that the vet will bill you according to what money he
thinks you have or if your dog has lots of pups then you can afford
it. I was not too sure what to make of that.

£600 is a lot Kath, your friend should ask him to justify the cost , break it down and say what cost what . I know the dog is more precious than money but there are folk out there cannot afford this amount of money unless they have insurence. my friend s girl had pups , her vet said £250 up front . as soon as he heard insurence he said and the other £300 after the bitch recovers. does your friend have insurence? With the various bits and pieces my bitches c section cost around £450 (this included spaying) in August last year, result 4 pups, with one dying in first week. At a different vets in FEb 2000 a bitch I whelped beonging to a friend in the breed needed a C section (same time of day) and cost the same, so my new vet is reasonable by comparison!

Hiya Brainless,
It sounds as though your vet is about right on prices. As I said earlier
my vet charged £250-00 for the c.section. I just had the same bitch
spayed today and I was charged £188-00. So my vet is around the
same price as yours. I always complain though at vet prices,
as I do not think they are fair on lots of things.
I have a question on hip scoreing prices, prehaps I will post that on the board.

That one is easy! Here they charge around £55 for anastheric, the same for the Xraying and plates, and then the £20 odd pounds to the BVA, and they are surprised that very few other than breeding stock get scored!!

Hi Kath

If the op was difficult for some reason this would put the price up - my vets charge per minute of operating time (plus excess if it is out of normal surgery hours)

Hope mum and pups are okay

Hi, I have heard about an insured (not for whelping) bitch who needed a c-section. The ownr made a claim saying that if the bitch had not had the op, she would have died and eventually after lots of wrangling, the insurance co. paid up. i think I saw it on this site? Does anyone else remember it? The last c section I had done was on a 10kl bitch, took 2hours altogther (5 pups) and cost £270 inc of after drugs and stitches out a week later.

pet plan insurance cover bitch for caser and whelping problem, that why iam with them to cover my bitch in case there a problem,

I remember it WL as it was posted in reply to your bitches C section. I think they found a 'get out clause' so to speak in that the policy covered emergency operations. Whilst it did not cover whelping the vet I think commented that this was indeed an emergency operation to save the bitches life. Can't for the life of me remember who posted it though.

caeser prices very for many reasons - what time of day was the caeser ? - was a nurse called out - was more than one nurse called out - how many pups to revive - how long was the op - any complications/xrays/antibiotics - big dogs cost more for everything more anesthesia/antibiotics etc - what area you live in - etc. vets do tend to charge by the hour and believe me its a very difficult op at 3 o'clock in the morning ! ! £600 it probably a lot but what does it include? ask for a breakdown receipt - your friend is very lucky that she can pay after she has sold the pups - our clients have to pay as they go !

I just cannot believe the prices you are all paying for vets fees. My bitch Cleo had difficulties whelping so we got a vet up at 5 am to administer 5 oxytocin injections to try to deliver pups she got tired and had to have the last two delivered by caesarean after 5 hours of care in the surgery. This included cups of coffee warm blankets for the bitch to lay on and stitch removal and small call out charges for night time the total charge came to £135 I knew our vets were very resonable but now I really appreciate him. He only charges £19 for pregnancy scanning my friend pays £45. Today our pup has been at the surgery for 5 hours having x rays on a suspected dislocation the grand total was £24 he is always busy (no wonder) there are at least 4 vets working for him and they always have time to explain things. Also they will prescribe cheaper drugs if at all possible. I think some vets are really taking advantage if ours can have a good standard of living on his charges your vets must be Millionaires
