In a lot of breeds the stud fee is about the price of a Pet puppy, but this does vary from breed to breed, and soem studs are more expensive, than say an untired dog, being tried with a proven bitch helping to start his stud carreer.
If you use the search facility on this board and type in stud dog you will find lots of old posts on this topic.
You will see from these that Stud dogs are not a commodity as such, with their services offered freely. Reputable stud dog owners will be approached by bitch owners who feel that that particular dog has something to offer the bitch they own and his and her ancestors will complement each other to produce typical, healthy puppies of the best temperament.
It is therefore esentiual to have a good working knowledge of the dogs in your bitches pedigree, or if you do not know them for at least 3 generations first hand then you need to work with someone who does.
The stud dog owner will be able to also advise if he thinks the pedigrees will match, as well as the dogs compliment each other, though of course you won't know which stud dog owner to approach unless you know your bitches pedigree well.
For this reason I would advise you contact your girls breeder for an assessment of her potential as a brood. Has she been shown and had some success? That would give you an idea of her quality.
Something else to think about is that in any breed there is an acceptable variation in type that still fits the breed standard, so you would do well to attend a few shows (even if you don't want to show yourself) to look at the stock and make a note which dogs are the Sires of the dogs you admire (and assuming they are the ones that place in the upper part of their classes at several shows).
I am assuming that you have had the bitch Hip Scored and she has a good low score. Something to bear in mind is that Great Danes are not the kind of dog to fit in with the average family easily, so homing anything upr to 15 puppies takes a lot of skill, ohterwise you could find yourself with several badly reared, trained and soiclaised pups back for rehoming at the worst teenage stage.
My appologies if you are already further doen your research road than would appwear from your posting :D
