Topic Dog Boards / General / Dobe in the rain

My dobe puppy refuses to go out in the rain.  I make him go into the garden and he does what he has too then runs back in.  The other evening we went for a walk and we were in the park and it started raining, he proceeded to go under a tree and wanted to wait for the rain to stop.  I then put him back on the lead and got to the exit of the park and tried to take him the quick way (along the road) back to the car, but he sat and would not move.  He looked most upset, he just hates the rain.  I had a dobe before and he was exactly the same I would physically pick him up and put him outside the front door to go for our walks.  Is this a trait of dobes, not to like the rain?

In my expeoence of my freinds now 7 dobes most definately.  Smae goes for a lot of short haired breeds.  Mind my thick coated Elkhounds will not go out to pee in the rain, but offer them a walk and they will go out in anything.

My dobe will not even go out for a walk, he gets out of the door and just sits down and looks very unhappy, he just wants to go back inside.  This was the same for my other dobe also.  I do make him go for a walk, I just have to keep giving him plenty of encouragement and telling him what a good boy he is.  But he looks so sad when he is out in the rain.

Didn't you know?  Dobermanns melt if they go out in the rain :-)  This is what they would have you beleive anyway.

Having said that I currently have one who does not like the rain and four who don't seem to notice it and will stay out as long as they would in any other weather.  I think my male deliberately gets wet because he loves being towelled down when he comes in :)

It's not just a Dobe thing - Great Danes are notorious for it too. My 8mo pup is terrible - whenever we have heavy rain (VERY often now in winter in NZ!), she has a house-training relapse: hates going out so will hold it until she has an accident. I have to resort to baby-puppy houset-training routine again (out at regular intervals and watch her until she goes) which is very annoying when she is 100% reliable the rest of the time! :(
Even when I take her out, she will stand in the sheltered bit of the verandah, stick her nose out and sniff the cold air.rain and then give me "the look" - and I have to literally push her butt out into the rain and onto the grass to get her to go. She looks so utterly miserable!
Walks she's better as the fun/excitement of it overrides the horror of the rain, I think! But she's a real sun-worshipper: if the sun is out, you can always find her squeezed onto the biggest patch of sunlight on the carpet, somewhere in the house. :)

No Dobermanns don't do rain.  Mine will make himself as small a possible to fit under the eaves of our bungalow to do the necessary before rushing back in, unlike the Afghans who are out soaking it up like sponges!

My Siberian husky girl doesn't like rain. I don't believe its in the breed, but she's just a little wimp about it. "Mom, I just groomed my coat! Now its getting messed up and I have to groom it again!" She and her son, Houdini, both have dog houses that they can climb into when it rains. I have seen Kieron snuggled up inside a couple of times and have even stuck my hand inside and boy, does it get toasty warm inside! Anyways, if she is caught in the rain and doesn't have the brains to climb into her house, she just stands in the middle of a big mud puddle and stares at the back door with her head hanging down as far as it will go. Sometimes I don't even see her ears as she lays them back so far. Houdini on the other hand, he doesn't care one way or the other whether its raining or not. Heck, I've seen him laying flat on his back, all four paws sticking straight into the air while it poured down the rain. If he's happy, its fine if he stays in the rain, I get to clean up after him either way. =) Silly dogs!

Our Spinoni will happily go out for their walks in the rain and not even notice it, but don't ask them to go out into the garden for a wee if its even so much as a light shower!  Even if ruthlessly pushed out into it (I'm a cruel Mum :D ) they just huddle on the doorstep, taking turns to stick their heads through the cat flap, gazing mournfully to get back in :)  They must have been taking tips from a Dobermann :D

Mine are the same, I've seen me open the doof first thing on a wet morning and they are bounding to the door to go out, spot the rain and literally skid to a halt.  :D  But it works for me I don't like the rain either.

I wish mine wouldnt go out in the rain - they'll quite happily stand out in the heaviest downpour until they're thoroughly soaked than all rush in and lean against the walls, sofa, me etc..... ( ahh the fragrance of hairy wet dog - I call it EAU DE CHIEN)

My previous Dobe wouldn't go out in the rain. If she was desperate for a pee, she'd nip out and pee just outside the door and then dash back. Lola, my current Dobe, isn't at all bothered about rain and is quite happy to go for long walks. Unlike Dobe 1, she doesn't go in puddles - Strange .......
