My seven month old staff is worrying me slightly.  My bulldog bitch has just come into season and although I am doing well in keeping them apart, he seems so unhappy, whining and howling and generally not his happy self :(  I was expecting this to an extent, any advice in how to cheer him up? Going for a good game of ball in the field now.  I was intending to let him mature fully before having him castrated but I don't think I can bear seeing him like this.  I might have to look into putting him in kennels because I don't really have anyone I can leave him with as all my friends are busy or have dogs.
Thanks Sue

This is natural behaviour for an entire dog whether it was a staff or a yorkie. All males can smell a bitch is in season and their natural urge is to mate so when they are told no they sulk. Ther is no point buying deodrants to mask the smell as they rarely work. He may turn a bit more aggressive with other dogs when out on walks so use caution. The best option is to remove him from the house when your bitch is in season by either building a kennel/run in your garden or letting a friend have him for a few weeks. When he is due to return make sure you wash your bitch to remove any lingering odour fo season or he may try to mount her which may cause a nasty scene.

aCould put one or the other into kennels for the 2 to 3 weeks that is what a lot of people do when they have dogs of both sexes.
