Topic Dog Boards / General / bad advice?

Hi all
I just wondered what you think...
Woman I know has a 3 year old GSD.Sits outside the house (off lead...on the street...no garden) most of the day and although he rarely attacks any other dogs if another dog approaches that has a dominant disposition it ends up in a fight. He is very territorial and is dominant. He is also a cat killer and the owner cannot stop him when he takes off and kills the neighbourhood cats....thank god my cat stays away from him!!
They are now talking about getting another dog(GSD)..I have strongly advised them against but she said they'll get a bitch and have it speyed...I can only see this leading to problems...more dominance, guarding of his resources, etc.I think they look at me with 3 males and one female dog and say to them selves how can I say that .....but mine are not allowed to sit outside and do as they please.
Am I being over cautious in my advice ...the GSD has taken a severe dislike to one of my elks and I have to be VERY careful when I leave the house now...am worried that 2 dogs will mean 2x the trouble in this situation!!!

I feel a visit from your friendly dog warden is warranted here!

IMHO you are right to be worried. The situation is  already highly charged and can only get worse :(  What a silly owner that poor GSD has.

wish I could but we don't have a dog warden....we have untold numbers of latch key dogs who cause a mess and a nuisance everywhere and no one cares...in fact they think I'm odd for keeping my dogs secure!!
For eg last year this GSD attacked a small teriier who was on a lead...police called and said they wouldn't take any action since it was dog on dog.It has also bitten a child but the mother and dog owner didn't involve the police because it 'was the childs fault for cuddling the dog'!!

Thanks for the link..have checked it and none for my area.I phoned the local council last year about a 'dog' issue and they said they couldn't afford a dog warden!!

Thought it was against the law for a dog to be off lead on a public footpath, and it can't be ok for a dog to be in a public place unattended. If the police do not think it their concern and the council have not appointed a warden then perhaps a word to your local PM would stir things up a bit.

Sometimes you just have to realise that there are people in the world that you just cannot advise :(

It is an offence not keeping a dog under contol in any circumstances. You should find a trip to the local police station lodging a formal complaint should do the trick. If the owner doesn't comply then the police have the power to prosecute and a banning order may be imposed on the owner from having any dog.
