Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / time for c-section? Help please
- By darleneaw [us] Date 24.06.04 01:45 UTC
I was told be one person that I should be getting ready to do a C-section. This is a small litter 2-3 it is day 65 from the last breeding and 68 from the first. She has NO signs of labor. puppies are very active and she is in no distress. I was told they might die all of a sudden if I don't do surgery.
The vet said to watch her.
Anyone have any thoughts that could help
Thank you

Think you will have to go with your vet, it is true that small litters do somethimes not trigger the dam into labor. Hope all goes well for you and the bitch but think you need not worry for a few days.

go to the vets today, our bitch had a c-section last friday that was day 68. she only had 1 large pup. so labour wasnt never going to start with only 1

Are you monitoring her temperature twice a day?

if everything seems fine with mum ,our vets normally give you a week from due date,i'd start to take her temp, which normally in the last week of pregnancy should be around 100,you will see her temp start to drop sometimes as low as 96,and then it should peak back up,we have normally found our bitchs have there pups within around 3-7 hrs after the rise, but it can take up to 24hrs,if you have any worrys,or something just does'nt seem right take your girl to see your vet.good luck and keep us posted .

If temperature goes up to "normal" or above normal, that's the time for veterinary intervention.

I would think your vet would try to bring on labour before doing a C section. If you are worried, contact him, but at this stage you will have to trust his advice.

her temperature is telling me nothing. she has been aprox 99.5 for a bout 4 days now or more. this morning it was 98.6. she went out to walk around and it was 100.0. a little while later it was 99.6. it is very hot here. i live in the desert. if she goes outside it changes everything. she is still eating. have any of you noticed the backside pulsing? hers is doing that. how strange. my other bitch ate until she whelped so I can't really go by that either. she seemed to want to be in the whelping room a little more this morning but that's it. I have been in contact with my vet and we feel she ovulates late and to give more time if she's not in distress. I've been waiting for 5 days before the first breeding so it feels like it's been forever! I'm just trying to be patient right now. she does have slightly more clear discharge today at the tip of the vulva.
