Hi, I hope its ok to post this, my friends dog was put on steroids on thursday night, but started showing signs of being depressed and not wanting to go out for a walk, he started with 1/2 tablet on thursday, then increased it to one tablet fri, sat, sun, then 1/2 monday, but she stopped it without weaning him off it is this ok to do? he had the runs yesterday, and today, he was put on it for atopic allergies. I thought you had to wean them off it, she will contact her vet tomorrow, just looking for some reasurrance.
thanks for any help eleanor

No it`s not ok to stop with doing it by reducing gradually over time. It`s dangerous to suddenly stop them & I`m surprised the vet didn`t explain this. Tell your friend to have a word with the vet & explain whats happened.

Hi eleanor  :-) i'm with Christine..and would also add if you are prescribed any medication by vet or doctor it is unwise to stop taking it without first seeking advice, by doing so you may not only make the original problem worse but can also build up drug resistance. I do not understand why your friend did not ring her vet for advice if there was a problem with the prescribed drug, he may then have changed the dose or even the drug? I hope the dog will be ok.

Believe you are risking kidney problems by stopping too soon.   Ask the vet, and go by their advice.

There are also lots of different strengths of steroid tablets so "half" a tablet means little as it could be a .25 or a 25.

Agree with the others, once on steroids follow vet's instructions.  It is always possible that it could be something else causing current symptoms.
