Hi,
A member of my family is interested in buying a staffordshire bull terrier, we have been told there is a short legged, medium legged and a long legged breed, is this correct?
I have looked on the internet to find out about the breed and to see if its the best breed for us but the only pictures i can find are on one particular size which i think is small, i would like to see the difference between them.
If anyone could give me any infomation or some links on this matter that would be great.
Thanks
Kez

Hi Kez
they usually fall into either two catergories - athletic ( also referred to as "up on the leg") or bully :)
Although if showing they should still fit into the breed standard whichever body type they opt for.
Have you been to any shows so thatt you get a "feel" for the different lines?

PM me if you need any more advice :)

Hello, and welcome.

SBT have only one size they should be between 14" and 16" as per the breed standard, granted some are slightly talller but SHOULD be within the guidelines.
Do you think people who have told you are getting the SBT mixed up with the Irish by any chance.

Have you been to any shows. Go to a few and see which type you prefer try different shows because some stafford owners will show under judges that prefer their "type" it sounds confusing but isn't really. I am just terrible at explaining things.

Hi
Thanks for the infomation.
I rang up a breeder the other day and he told me also that there were diffeent types, he told me that his dog had medium legs, whatever size that was not sure.
I love the breed too myself and would love one but i own a chihuahua and she wouldnt get on with another dog ( been a only dog for too long, loves all the attention )
I will definately go to shows to see different breeds, discover dogs maybe, i think thats coming up soon, not sure
I do go to crufts but i have only been on the day siberian huskies are there as OH has 3 of them.
well thanks again for the info, if you think of anything else u would like to add about the breed please do as it would be greatly appreciated.

Well I'd tell who ever it is in your family who is thinking of getting a stafford be be ready to be questioned by the breeder. Lots and lots of questions, if not walk away anyone who can't ask questions of a prospective owner obviously does not care about their pups welfare. Sorry to sound harsh - but it's true.

Also try to meet Staffs out and about, most stafford owners love to talk about their dogs in fact you can't get them to shut up and ask what line or breeder they got them from. Try to steer clear of bargain pages, free ads etc. Staffords should be eye tested and look to see the mother with the pups you'd e looking to pay about £400-£500 for a well bred stafford pup to a pet home. No-one worth their salt would say a pup will be a show dog you have to wait and see, if the pup turns out to be of show quality. But the majority of staffs go to forever pet homes, which is what every good breeder wants.

Good breeders rarely advertise word of mouth is normally enough and have waiting lists so be prepared to wait for a GOOD stafford pup.

Staffs are the best dog in the world and a good one is a joy to everyone :) any more info feel free to ask here or PM Lel as she's already offered. Your welcome to Pm me if you like too, but Lel will be able to point you in the right direction I am sure.

Just a question where abouts are you?

Hi,
I know that breeders will ask questions as i have been through it before and i also made sure i asked questions, like you said the mother should have all relevent health checks to ensure a healthy pup.
Our local shop owns a SBT and it just sits outside all day a lovely dog and excellent temprement, alot of people said to us not to get a SBT cause they are not very good with children but i know thats a load of rubbish.
I wouldnt dream of getting a pup out of the bargain pages, u will most likely find that they are not up to the breed standard and have not had all relevent health checks done, you can see that they are just in it for the ££££ which i hate, the thought of the mother going through all that for their benefit , i definately want a pup what fits the standard and what has had all relevent checks and i will certainly question the breeder, we are prepared to pay that price for a well bred SBT and did expect to pay that much.
I only live about 30 minutes from where u are karen, wolverhampton, small world eh lol.
