Well until yesterday I have never thought much of lurchers.
HOWEVER; yesterday evening meet a man with a lurcher and a elderly bullmastiff. The lurcher was fantastic, not sure what he was crossed with but he had the look of a bearded collie do they use those for lurchers? but he was gorgeous and Sal spent about 20 minutes racing round with him. Very friendly dog.
The man said normally he avoids people with Staffs which was a shame but thinking about it I normaly go out of my way to avoid greyhounds and lurchers But both of us agreed that from now on we would at least not go out of our way to avoid the others breed.
Maybe it shows preconceived or conditioned ideas of breeds are not always true, do any of you go out of your way to avoid cerain breeds?

You're right it does depend on the "socilization" of the dog but for some reason I have always believed "lurchers/greyhounds" are "unsafe" with other dogs Odd I know.

No Kazz :-) none ..though I naturally prefer some to others. I think anyone who has seen a lurcher in full flight chasing a rabbit or leaping a wall could not fail to be impressed....and as for Staffies?..sturdy little dogs with a sence of humor how could anyone object to meeting one!!! :-D

Hi Karen,
I don't avoid specific breeds, but I watch very carefully before I let Abby (a Cairn) off her lead around dogs that I do not know. She is very playful, her dog manners are poor, she doesn't always take the hint when she gets a snarl or two, so I do my best to protect her from herself. She is too over the top for dogs which I think have more dominant characters (not necessarily breed related) and nervous dogs.
I have to say that I am personally more nervous with Abby around larger dogs which can be used for guarding/protection and Jack Russell Terriers. However, I try not to let my own reservations interfere.

My lurcher is brilliant with other dogs, and the cats. When we go out into the field all the dogs wait patiently by the gate and he flies over the top of them all and over the gate. :D

Oh dont go there about lurchers and cats  my mother is slightly batty when it comes to her dog and the dog is as batty as her. Lily loves my cats and when she comes to my house she ignores my pup and goes looking for the cats, luckily the cats tolerate her and will play with her for a while. When Lily is out walking she tries to greet every cat she sees but unfortunately not all dogs trust the yowling lurcher (she is deaf so cant hear herself screaming like a banshee

) Lily is also fond of rabbits and my dad has had to make new rabbit runs because she was getting the rabbits out and licking them  yeah great lurcher at least if the pikeys stole her they would soon give her back because she would be a useless hunting dog :D :D

Hi I try to judge dogs "attitude" before letting Sal meet them but I must admit I am not as nervouse now as I was when she was younger: Because she has better "dog manners" now plus the fact she's meet loads of dogs now and I don't think meeting the odd "nasty" one would bother her at all and she can look after herself now.
