Please can anyone advise me if it is ok for dad to be around mums pups, could he hurt them?

Some dogs are fine around pups, others aren't. More to the point, find out how mum will react to another dog near her pups! If she gets defensive (as is the norm) she could easily attack him to drive him away, or in the worst case kill her own pups.

My bitches have never allowed any of my other dogs near the same room as the pups until they are at least 2 weeks old.

Another problem is a dog being exercised out side can bring infection back into the pups, most bitches will not tolerate another dog near her pups until they are at least weaned and I would not risk even testing it as the bitch may well kill the pups, keep any dog out of the room until the bitch is not with the pups, in other words until they are weaned.

In my experience the first two weeks the bitch and pups need to be secluded.  I then bring them down to the kitchen, where Mum will guard them from the other dogs for varying lengths of time.  soje have been happy for the others to sniff through the puppy pen once they are 3 to four weeks old,a nd cactually allow them to get in with them after that.

My alpha bitch would still look askance at theothers when pups were 6 or more weeks old, and they respected her wishes.

Currently this bitch will allow her mother and Grandmother in the dog run with them, but not her daughter or Grandaughter, and thankfully the pup of nine months has lost interest, and is a little unsure of them anyway.

Many male dogs are afraid of young pups as they will try to look for a milk bar and this can quite unerve them.  Many will snap at the pups, and of course Mum will not have that either.

Things are usually fairly normal once pups are 10 to 12 weeks old, the other dogs seem to view them as individuals by then and will have little games with them, or tell them to get lost if so inclined.

This is my own breed that get on well with their own kind.  I would imagine things could be much different with a less social breed.
