- By Guest [gb] Date 21.06.04 20:41 UTC
Im trying to find out how big an acre is, how big compared to say a football pitch?
Or how big In terms, of how long to walk from one end to an other (of an acre).

if anyone could help, that would be great
cheers

An acre is 48,000 sq feet.  I reckon that's about 2 football pitches.

Very big if you are a goat, not so big if you are an elephant ;)

sorry if i am wrong but that seams quite large for an acre, i used to have an orchard and that was half an acre and no way was it the size of a football pitch... steph

we've got nearly 2 acres at the moment - it takes me about 15 minutes to walk from one end to the other(brisk pace ) At the moment we're looking to move and visiting houses with land - peoples idea of how big an acre is varies enormously !!

I have an acre and a half and it would only take 5 mins to walk from one end to the other, my sister had over 4 and again you could walk from one end to the other in less than 5 mins. Depends on the shape of the plot, I would say an acre is fine to exercise an average size dog but not a horse.

"The acre is the only unit of area in common use, other than the square-foot, and the square mile. The rood is an area of 1 furlong by 1 rod, or 1210 sq. yds. An acre is four roods. An acre is traditionally thought of as the area that could be ploughed by a team of oxen in a morning without tiring them."  :D

Very nice, but how big does it feeeeel :D
- By Sally [gb] Date 22.06.04 07:00 UTC
..so that would make it 4840 sq yds, not 48,000 sq ft.  Silly me. I blame my husband.  That is what he told me.  Someone must know the size of a football pitch.  Steph, you are probably right, our agility training area is half an acre and I don't think you would get a football pitch on it. :)

I am just going to take the dogs out in our field but I cannot walk around the edge until it gets cut otherwise I could time how long it takes me to walk around 5 acres. :D

but then hes just said that not all football pitches are the same. Doncaster rovers used to have the giggest one at 120 meters by 47 meters.and he says its got to be ninty meters to be with in the fa regulations. god this is worse than showing dogs.

An agility ring is usually 40 metres by 40 metres and our agility paddock is about the size of 2 rings plus a bit and it is half an acre so it is probably just a bit smaller than a football pitch.  :D

an acre is pretty close to the area of a football pitch, not all are quite the same but not much between them.

I've always been told its the size of a footy pitch....I didnt know there were different sizes though so thats stuffed me up :D
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 23.06.04 06:07 UTC
OK wish to disagree, football pitches are all the same size, football grounds may not be but surely pitches are.

Hi Jackie H,
No, pitch size (and shape) can vary.....

All I can say is what a strange game, what purpose is there in having a set area to play in if it is not always the same as in Netball. Some games do not have boundries and the game can be played anywhere, but to find that football with all it's rules does not have a rule covering the size and layout of the pitch should come as a suprise but somehow does not.

I too was astonished to learn recently that there is no regulation size for football pitches. (Mind you, there are no outside boundaries to a lacrosse pitch at all!)
- By gwen [gb] Date 23.06.04 08:34 UTC
Now did you need to bring up lacrosse?  It is bringing back all sort of unpleasant memories - did no one else find it terrifying?  Hockey was bad enough, but added inthat you carried your stick in the air, and sent that horrid hard ball flying at all angles - it scared me silly!
bye
Gwen
and straying back on topic, my whole site area here is just on 1 acre,  and is fairly square, it talks just a couple of minutes to walk along any side of it.
1 acre was  always given as the minimum area to calculate per horse for grazing land.

<<did no one else find it terrifying?>>

Oh yes! Being goalie was worst, when they were actually aiming at you - and the only protection was leg pads and a small bodypad - no helmet like they have now!
