Anyone got any ideas how we can stop our 2 year old from jumping on the settees. She will only do it when we have left the room, we don't say anything just pull her off but 5 secs later she's up again. Neither of them are allowed on the furniture uninvited but would it be a good idea to ban it altogether? It's really annoying and we would like to stop them getting hairs everywhere!
Thanks
Emily

Hi Emily, what is it that annoys you about dogs on settees as this will sort of dictate the options. If you just hate the hairs you could use a throw/blanket to protect the sofa and the blanket will signal to the dogs they can get up. Can you keep em out of the living room when you dont want them up on the sofa maybe use a baby gate or just shut the door? An afterthought is where do they rest when not invited to share the couch? Providing something as  halfway pleasant to lie on as the couch would be good, with a chew or something to relax and settle them in the room - takes care of bouncing on and off couches. :)

dont leave them in the room alone?!!!!!

personally i dont see the big fuss about dogs on furniture! they live there to!

i had a friend who had a chair for the dog, which the dog was encouraged to use & the dog didnt go on the others, this may be a idea!

The dogs arent allowed on my furniture for the simple reason I dont want it smelling all doggy I also dont want manky chew sticks and bones taken up there to chew on, it also isnt nice when visitors come round and they end up covered in dog hair.  Also I have cream throws on there and no matter how much their feet are washed and dried they still stay a bit mucky and I dont want that on my sofa !!  On the other hand they are allowed on my bed in the mornings for a cuddle, this is usually (although quite often not) when they are clean, but my bedroom door is always closed so they can only come in when I let them.

Back to the original post .......... I would either shut them out of the room when you are not there or put tin foil or something on the sofa so it scares them when they jump up.  Personally I just say "off" and make them get off but then my living room door is usually closed because they like to take chunks out of my plants

When you leave the room, tip the base cushions up, or bring the back cushions forward to create a height barrier....alternatively, get a leather sofa that you can wipe hairs off - they're wonderful :D :D

We actually used to 'put the cushions up' every night before we left them but it didn't stop them jumping up and knocking them down! We are getting a leather settee which will help with the hairs but I personally think it's rude/disrespectful when they jump up without asking, like waiting before you walk through a door. I think the best idea is to not leave them in the room alone, I have now started putting them in the spare room when we go out so they can't jump on anything. We are having work done at the mo so have no doors seperating the living, dining rooms and kitchen. When it's all done they will be left in the kitchen with nice comfy beds.
Thanks anyway for all your suggestions.

best just not let them in there alone then,i dont think its really fair to change the rules now & youll probaley have to be very tough to enforce it!

personally i love my dogs on the sofa with me of a evening watching corrie! i love my dogs more than my sofa & am prepared for all the mud & hair that comes with owning dogs! im not particarly house proud & realise that some people are more so than me!so fair play to you.

i see my dogs as my friends & dont think its disrespectfull for them to get up on the sofa if they want to. if i had a guest round i wouldnt expect them to wait to be asked if they could sit down. obvisley theres the kennel or crate option also if that suits your way of life.

Am I reading it right from your posts that the dog is allowed up sometimes?  If this is the case try giving a signal which would mean that they are allowed.  We put down an old towel and that means they are allowed up with us.  If the towel is removed they dont come up.  SImple as that.

It took about 4 months for this to be consistant...but the same happens for us now...great isn't it? :D

Im going to try that, at the moment Fagan sits on my lap for cuddles but he is only 12 weeks old I think he would flatten me once fully grown

Hi Emily :-) there are some good ideas to try here! I had the same problem BUT consider the problem was of my own making because I  encouraged my dog to get up on the sofa in the first place (cos I like to cuddle smelly dogs) so thought it would not be reasonable of me to expect my  dog to jump up at some times and not others. I tried the cushion thing and watched through the window to see them being quickly tossed on the floor the moment my back was turned :-D I eventually solved the problem by getting the dog to jump down saying 'down' and giving praise and a tipbit when she went to her bed. I closed the door when not in the room. The problem then was she wanted to stay in the 'cosy bed' and not on my knee on the sofa when requested and gave a withering loook when asked to do so..you can't win :-D lol..
