Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Shar Pai
- By Izzi [im] Date 17.06.04 20:30 UTC
Hello, I know a pretty agressive shar pai that my Labrador was recently in a dog fight with. Everytime I go past this shar pai tries to attack me. I have had to crass the road to get past the house. I gave my 6yr old cousin such a fright whin it came galavanting out and bashed into the bars of the gate. My dog now walks straight past and ignors the shar pai, but its behavior is getting steadily worse and the owner has done nothing about it. And has just called the dogs name, which does not help. Is this normal behavior for shar pai's or is it the upbringing, and how can I stop this?

I don't think you can classify any type of behaviour as "normal" for any breed as there are extremes in any dog.

But Shar Peis were bred as fighting dogs in China, which I believe means they can be dog aggressive.  However, this particular Shar Pei sounds as though he is protecting his territory.  You didn't explain the circumstances of the dog fight?

Two doors up from me used to have 2 Shar Peis, which were hell on Earth if you walked past the door, but sweethearts if you met them on the street.

I don't think your neighbour is doing anything illegal, as the dog is on his own property and securely contained.  Unless it frequently escapes and attacks dogs/humans, there's nothing you can really do about it.  Maybe you could try talking to the man and suggesting he lets the dog out the back garden, not the front?

Not much help, I know!

Hi, I always thought that the Shar Pei were in fact bred as  guard dogs in China, but not fighting dogs as is often stated.  I've probably got that wrong knowing me, and hopefully some of the Pei experts on this board can tell me if I'm wrong. I think that Shar Pei are naturally aloof with strangers, but not known for hostility unless poorly socialised and not raised properly, as all dogs.

Izzy,

If I were you I would change my route so I was always on the other side of the road from the Shar Pei.  It's the easiest thing to do.

The thing about the shar pai is that it got out one day and my friend said you know, i dont like it, but i will put it back, and it bit her and drew blood. I know shar pai's and they are sooooo nice, but even in the park, this shar pai tries to attack any dog it sees, is it natural behavior?

Hi Izzi,

Attacking any dog he sees is not normal behavior, nor is biting someone because they are walking on the street near his house.
