Where I work we have two Border Terrier's - one of which has been a little off colour for the last day or two - we put it down to the warm weather. She's my bosses dog (boss away on holiday but dog not fretting as she comes to work and see everyone and is happy as Clarry). Just had a phone call from bosses daughter as dog wasn't at work today - and she said dog not well. We've brought her into work so we can monitor her. She's just lying around, has been sick and also more worrying is the fact shes been passing blood from her back end. We've got her into the vets for 3pm but we're so worried about her.
Can anyone give us any clues as to what might be the matter with her? Her sister is fine.

It could be any number of things and I dont think it would be right for unqualified people to offer advice over the net about a dog they havent seen :(
Can you not see the vet any earlier ? I wouldnt like to wait that long for my own
Have you taken her temperature, is it high, is she drinking? How old is she? It could be any number of things from a bug she`s picked up or something more serious. If I where you I`d take her the vet before 3, seeings tho she`s been off colour for a couple of dys already.

We couldn't get an earlier appointment - can you believe it? If it was down to me I would go to another vet but the person closest to my boss it taking charge of things.
Shes only 1 year and 2 months old - yes she's just had a drink in the last 10 mins, and no we haven't taken her temp - don suppose theres another wa of checking her temp with out a thermometer?
Thanks for the replies
personally i wouldnt wait till 3pm thats nearly 3 hours away,
but i suppose there isnt alot you can do, if this other "closest person to your boss" has taken over,
hope the dogs is better soon, good luck

I would ring the vet back and explain you are extremely worried and feel an emergency appointment was necessary.

Shes been to the vets and they think its Gastric (sorry can't spell the word I want to use) - sickness and diahorea. The advice they said was not to feed her (shes not eating anyway) and to give her plently of water. They also think she might have swallowed something like a pebble. She's had 2 injections and has to go back tomorrow. Her temp was low.

Dexy :-) Hi, that's possibly gastritis which has a number of causes..food /infection..No don't try to give her anything if the vet has said nothing. Give water but I would advise not to let her drink a lot in one go. Better to put a small amount down at a time and keep replacing it. Try to keep the dog cool and quiet. When you have been to the vets again IF THER SAY the dog can eat feed small amounts at a time of boiled rice with white fish or cooked chicken. Hope the little dog is ok :-)

The fact that she doesn't want to eat shouldn't worry you too much. If the vet has said don't feed her then don't no matter how much begging goes on. Egg and rice slows the system down and binds everything together, which is great so long as you aren't keeping a bug or infection in the system for longer than nature is trying to do - which is what happened to my sisters west highland terrier, slowing her tummy down kept the bug in for longer and she never got over it. Any particular reason they think it could be a stone? don't dogs usually eat stones because there is something wrong with their digestive system - a bit like birds?
hope all improves, you won't be volunteering to look after other peoples dogs again!
