I am not a Westie breeder. But I can say this:
Your heading "should I breed my Westie"?
asks a question. The answer is, breeding any
animal can be very difficult, hard work, and also
upsetting. But you do also get to meet lots of
interesting people and its great fun having puppies.
In most breeds the first thing any one would do is
check your dog is kennel club registered. If she is
check to see if she has any breeding endorsements on
her certificate. If she has then you will need to ask your
breeder to lift it. She/He may not. So that would answer
your question. Next pop along to the vet and ask what
relevant health testing is required for your breed. If he can
not answer then contact the "breed club for Westies".
In my breed we always ask why do you want to breed? Because in most
cases its for another puppy. Or in some cases people think they
will actually make money out of breeding. You can loose a lot of
money when you breed a litter of puppies so dont breed with this in
mind.
A lot of people dont realise the
heart break of loosing a bitch when in whelp when things
go wrong. Also if you have say 4 pups and 2 die.
It can be heart breaking. What is normally asked as well is
how do you know your bitch is an excellent specimen of the
breed, and have you shown her? These are all questions a
stud dog owner may ask you.
So should you breed your dog? Its entirely up to you. But if you
do. Have the relevant health tests done, and find an excellent
dog for stud. You dont go back to the breeder for the same
stud dog as the father of your bitch. But you can go back to her/
him for advice. They may know of reasons why your dog should
not be bred. Or can advice the best line of stud dog for you.
Good luck and let me know how you get on.
Nutkin.
